Naming your ds after your Husband

The problem is that ive used all my boys names up-now the only one left that I like is Mark and that happens to be dhs name. He is unhappy about calling ds3 this but cannot come up with any alternatives at all.
I was thinking of calling ds3 Mark Jason as it flows nicely with our surname, has the only name that dh has toyed with (jason) in it and can be shortened to MJ as a nickname.

Now I am worried about the MJ thing, too like mary jane?
Oh the problem that dh wont really go for it but cant offer anything else.
I would b happy with Jason as a first name but everyone wev'e told it too hates it, dh likes it tho and is the name of a hero of his ( Quealy )

Is it naff to name your child after your dh? does it cause problems?

really naff, sorry.
Jason is nice though, whats wrong with that, up to you and dh at the end of the day.

I don't think it's naff. I do like the name Mark.

DS2 is named after his dad, although we use a different short-form.

I like Mark, not fussed on Jason.

Don't like initials generally, but hey, if you like it, that's what counts.

My son is called after his late father. they were both known by different abbreviated versions of it, and it never caused problems when dh was alive.

I'm exceptionally glad we gave him that name and I don't consider it naff at all, as the name goes back many generations to dh's Polish ancestors

I wanted to give DS DH's name as a middle name and he refused even that!
I don't see the problem, except I guess it could be confusing practically?

I have a friend whose DH and DS have the same name and the son does get known as Little .... which will probably annoy him when he's older.

Marcus?

Mark is nice, Marcus is gorgeous!

Not naff, but potentially confusing.

WE gave DS dh's name as a middle name.

Marcus is a great way arround the name confussion! I like Marcus, it reminds me of Luca which was on my boys list.

it's not naff if it makes you both happy. but i think Jason is very nice too. (what's not to like about it??)

pointydog · 08/09/2008 19:18

how about Marco/Marcus or Marcel ( really like Marcell but realise that for most people the image of that little monkey in Friends will come to mind, sigh)....

I do like Mark...but if your dh isn't keen...
Jason is an o.k. name I think...

I love dp's name, and wanted to use it if we had a ds. He was adamant that we wouldn't. We have 2 dds anyway, so problem solved

I like Mark

I know someone with husband and grown up son called Graham and its quite annoying sometimes when she talks about 'Graham' you dont no which she is talking about. Then sometimes she refers to them as little graham and big graham.

Like Mark, Marcus is a great name. Not fussed on Jason, but as other posters have said it's your decision. As to naming DS after DH, no reason not to.

Both my sons cary their fathers name in their names, though not as their first name. IMO it is traditional and I was very suprised at how proud I felt that they do,...he is a fine man.

Speaking from experience (db(rother) is named after df(ather)). It causes no end of confusion as they get older with phone calls, mail etc. And it's a bit weird when your parents say they couldn't think of a nicer name! Same name with different diminuitives is fine but quite hard to achieve with Mark.

I'd go with Marcus.

Dh has my first choice of boy's name, so ds has a similar name & different shortened form. It is very occasionally confusing when people get the short forms muddled.

Ds (4) loves having a similar name to Daddy

I don't think it's naff at all. The sons I know that are named after their dads are proud of it.

MIL did this and regretted it as they divorced bitterly! I also have friends who did it and their DH/DS are known as 'big' and 'little' Steve which is funny sometimes.

ds1 has dh name as middle name.i really dont like the name much but first son and all that.

Report
phdlife · 09/09/2008 11:36

ds's name is his father's name, but in a different language.

so there's a link, but it's also entirely his own name.

Report
EffiePerine · 09/09/2008 11:39

find it a bit patriarchal tbh

is there no other name you can agree on? Or use it as a middle name?
