This is another on my shortlist. I'm not keen on having Esme alone I like it more as a nickname and I love Esmeralda.
Is it too much?

Reminds me of hunchback of notre damn......

Esmerelda awful. Esme wonderful <<biased cos I have one>>

Wow I've just replied to two baby name threads about both my dds name.. Esme and Madeleine. Weird or what?

ThinWhiteDuchess Mon 08-Sep-08 13:59:29

Esme is lovely. Was on our shortlist for DD.

Not overly keen on Esmerelda - it's the Hunchback of Notre Dame connection for me as well, I think. I can't see the name written witout hearing the hunchback character from the film saying it.

I really like Esme though.

Esme YES Esmarelda NO (makes me think of Hunchback too)

Hi

Esme is a pretty name but I think Esmerelda is not. Definately the notre dame thing that ruins it for me im afraid

EffiePerine Mon 08-Sep-08 14:07:08

Very Terry Pratchett. Not necessarily a bad thing

nailpolish Mon 08-Sep-08 14:07:11

what is wrong with Esme on its own?

she would not thank you for Esmerelda IMO

mazzystar Mon 08-Sep-08 14:07:30

Esme is okay but Esmerelda is just a bit too panto for my liking.

JuneBugJen Mon 08-Sep-08 14:08:36

Esme gorgeous.

Like the other I am picturing a hunchback hanging from a bell tower with Esmerelda.

Megglevache Mon 08-Sep-08 14:09:01

I like just Esme, very popular here, it's so pretty.

regularlyoverwhelmed Mon 08-Sep-08 14:11:01

oh it's lovely, and she need never call herself esmerelda (but she may just love having it in her back pocket so to speak) I'd love to have the option of calling myself Esmerelda when I felt like it. In fact may just change name by deed poll now you've put the thought into my mind grin wink go for it

AnnVan Mon 08-Sep-08 14:14:52

I rather like Esme, only thing for me is I'm a HUGE Terry Pratchett fan, so Esme naturally conjures up the surname 'Weatherwax' and images of a witch with a broom that doesn't work properly blush

pagwatch Mon 08-Sep-08 14:21:55

I have to say no on the basis that that is what my ex flat mate used to call her vagina.

parchment Mon 08-Sep-08 14:26:47

It's spelled Esmeralda (orig from Emerald),so why is everybody spelling it Esmerelda? hmmsmile
That might be another black mark against it sad

Anna8888 Mon 08-Sep-08 14:31:05

Don't like either name much.

babybarmy Mon 08-Sep-08 15:29:38

I'm about to have a baby and we plan to call her Esme Camille. Don't like Esmerelda at all..sounds too witchy and features in of fantasy films, books etc.

Esme is softer and quite unusual still..although its seems now that there are more around than I thought!

JFly Mon 08-Sep-08 15:32:35

I have a friend who's called their baby just that. Don't know that she'll ever use the full name, but short version is sweet.

parchment Mon 08-Sep-08 15:36:09

It's Esmeralda!! Esmerelda is a wrong spelling
<sigh> the mispelling is putting me off the name more than anything else sad or is that the idea <suspicious emoticon> smile

babybarmy Mon 08-Sep-08 15:48:53

sorry..I misspelled it! You should choose what you like..my family and friends have all given their opinions with such gusto I was trying to please them and lost sight of what my DH and I like.

They can all name or have named their own kids..It's our turn now :-)!!

Janni Mon 08-Sep-08 15:49:13

I love Esme. I hate Esmeralda.

parchment Mon 08-Sep-08 15:54:17

barmybaby, oh sorry I didn't mean just you. Everybody in the whole thread bar the last poster has spelt it with an e.

cece Mon 08-Sep-08 16:01:18

Esme is becomming increasingly popular. There are two in DD's infants school.
