Think you've decided on a name? Check out where it ranks on the official list of the most popular baby names first.

Please settle an argument between DH and me...

One of us thinks this name is unique, powerful and fabulous. The other of us thinks the kid would end up hiding under his desk and avoiding bus queues for the whole of his school career (and probably beyond).

What do you think, given neither of us is of Norse/Scandinavian extraction? You can be honest as if you disagree I will not be showing this to DP anyway...

I initially read it as thyroid and I don't think that's a good thing. smile

Lauriefairycake Tue 26-Aug-08 20:25:47

that is hilarious grin

so, so, so, truly awful, please don't.

MatNanPlus Tue 26-Aug-08 20:26:45

hmm hmm no

CuckooSplodgeandTubs Tue 26-Aug-08 20:26:56

I like Ranald and Magnus (and I like Donald)

Thor might be ok for some parents. I couldn't pull it off myself, but, you know, the right parents might do it without any eyes being rolled behind them.

BUT tbh, Thorold is an eye-roller.

MatNanPlus Tue 26-Aug-08 20:27:37

Magnus is nice

yousaidit Tue 26-Aug-08 20:27:58

A cross between Harold and Thyroid? grin Sorry, don't man to be rude if either of you really like it, but that was my first thought, along with 'Oooh no!!' Have you got any other boys names picked as a backup?

squeaver Tue 26-Aug-08 20:29:16

no way (i suspect I'm with you dh on this??)

McDreamy Tue 26-Aug-08 20:29:38

I think he might run the risk of having his dinner money nicked - sorry sad

DorrisMcWhirter Tue 26-Aug-08 20:29:53

Nope, it really does read as thyroid. I think the 'hiding under desk' scenario would be a reality.

mylovelymonster Tue 26-Aug-08 20:30:05

Is that the best name you/he can come up with? Good God!!!!

I must sympathise a little, though. Our list of potential boys names was woefully short.....

PuppyMonkey Tue 26-Aug-08 20:30:23

Bloody horrid.

mylovelymonster Tue 26-Aug-08 20:31:12

...not that way-out tho.............and certainly not bully-fodder..............

fortyplus Tue 26-Aug-08 20:32:17

A lifetime of people asking 'How do you spell THAT?!'

Anyway, it's not unique - there was a film director called Thorold Dickenson.

Thorold is also a Canadian city - you may as well call your son Toronto wink

RedHead81 Tue 26-Aug-08 20:33:25

hmm, its um... different.
Not a fan I have to admit...
so... which one of you likes it then?? Fess up!!!

SundayRoast Tue 26-Aug-08 20:36:12

No - though I do like Thor!

plantsitter Tue 26-Aug-08 20:36:40

ha HA! I hate it and was never planning to allow it anyway but I'm printing this thread out to show DP so he can see EXACTLY how much of a terrible idea it was.

I'm also quite impressed with my own presentation of a balanced view as I thought it would be glaringly obvious I thought it was stupid (no offence any Thorolds out there).

BouncingTurtle Tue 26-Aug-08 20:37:23

Definitely the latter.

Sorry but it is awful!!!

BroccoliSpears Tue 26-Aug-08 20:38:11

I like it.

It's truly, truly awful.

plantsitter Tue 26-Aug-08 21:04:57

Thanks for liking it, BroccoliSpears. I'm feeling a bit mean to DP now!

JuneBugJen Tue 26-Aug-08 21:08:20
