How do you spell the version of Marie that's pronounced MAR-ee rather than Muh-REE?

Or are they both spelled Marie and you just have to tell everyone?

Thanks

Do I have to be Scottish? Married surname is and one of my grans is, but I am not. I have an ancestor who is MAR-ee rather than Muh-REE but I think it's just spelled Marie - problem being that I like MAR-ee but not Muh-REE (apologies to any Maries )

i have a colleague named Marie - pronounced Mar-ee (emphasis on the Mar) She does need to tell everyone that its pronounced that way and gets very annoyed when it isn't pn that way!

As far as I know MAR-ee is spelled Mari. South Africa Marie is pronounced this way because of the Afrikaans accents. Melanie is pronounced Mel-arnie and Karen also has the long sound.

if I saw Marie, I would pronounce it Mah-ree/Mar-ee...is it possible that people only would pronounce it Mur-ee depending on their accents?

Both my mum and my gran are called Marie pronounce with the emphasis on the MAR. It causes no end of confusion. I would definitely go with Mairi. Lovely name!

i'm irish and an accent is put on the 'a' to create the emphasis on thus mar-ee rather than mur-ee

Husband has an auntie Marie, pronounced Marry but still spelt same.

Thanks all Think she will have to spend a lifetime explaining it (because even spelled Mairi, people like me would probably still pronounce it Mary! ) but I have a (semi-Spanish) friend who spells her name Sara and pronounces it Sarah, and she seems to cope

this made me think of 'mah-riel's wedding' lol.

names are so tricky - i had an unfortunate experience with a 'sile' who turned out to be 'sheila'.

i always get it wrong.

I have a scottish friend called Mairi and she pronounces it 'marry'. Just to cloud the issue further .

Mairi is prettier than Marie though, imo.

Here in Germany we pronounce Marie MAR-ee. I think it depends on your accent, and where you live.

DSis is a Mari (marry) tho' christened Marie. She dropped the 'e' for reasons best known to herself. I don't think she has ever had much difficulty getting people to say her name right. We're all Irish so it's interesting to hear the Scottish bit.

Thanks for all the feedback - who knew that there were so many ways to spell/pronounce the same name?! Good to know there are some places where she won't have to explain herself though! I think Mairi is a pretty spelling.

Now wondering about:

Mairi Edith
Mairi Elizabeth or
Mairi Edith Elizabeth

(Edith is my mum's name and Elizabeth is MIL's, so would be good to have them both but is that too many names?)
