It's my grandmother's name, dp and I both love it, but is it TOO old fashioned? I'm afraid I cannot STAND some of the celeb tryhard names that you see floating about, so it has to be what I would consider to be a sensible proper name! (let's just hope she's not too contrary!)

it's not old fashioned at all. It's a very normal, nice name (phew)

it's a pretty name.
it's definitely a sensible proper name, and it's unlikely there would be another in her class at school as it's not very popular at the moment.

GORGEOUS
I love it

(it is my dd's middle name, and my Mum's)

I love this name; it was a real contender for us when dd was born in '04!

Oh thank you ladies - we think so too , but I have had a few raised eyebrows from friends. Perhaps they think I should call her Poonani or Phlegm?!! I know it's up to us what we call our own child, but it is nice to check these things in the relative safety of mumsnet!

I am a Mary. She will get a million puns made about her name; not nasty ones just dumb-arse teachers etc saying Mary Mary Quite Contrary, or random people saying "Here comes Mary from the Dairy"

I can't say I love my name. I don't hate it either. It's just a bit...meh.

One good point is that there are very few other Mary's around, so I was never "Mary Initial" at school.

Great - what a relief that so many of you like it too. Any ideas for middle names that would go well?

Mom's name, grandmother's name.

Classic

I really like it, too - very strong, and pretty too. Maybe since Mary is quite a short and untwiddly name, something a bit longer would work as a middle name. Elizabeth? Eleanor? Isabella?

not Joanna
or Jane
that's for sure

erm
what is your surname like?

Report
jellyrolly · 15/08/2008 14:15

Ours would have been Mary Hannah. What are your contenders?

Mary's a fantastic name

I get called Scary Mary occasionally, but that's my own fault - I usually tell people that one

priceyp, I thought it was Mary Bernadette (also reveals her Catholic background AND her middle name in one!)

EffiePerine · 15/08/2008 16:39

lovely - classic rather than old-fashioned

go for it
