Baby names

Edith?

Not for my DC3 to be but a name I heard today on a 9 month old baby, I was quite shocked as not a name I have ever heard a child called. I asked the grandmother whether they called her Edie but she said no, just Edith.

I am alone is thinking it was quite an "unusual" name for a baby?

I know a child called Edith - infct her mum is a MNettter.

I think it is a nice girl's name, and I also quite like the shortenin Edie too. But like Edith in its own right.

it is a lovely name. perhaps you haven't heard of edith nesbit? she wrote 'the phoenix and the carpet' and many other books.

edie is short for edith.

I am not averse to it as a name, just a bit surprised as have not heard it for a long long time.

Nothing wrong with standing out from the crowd!

Darn, I thought this was going to be the baby name thread where I could finally go 'yes, great name, love it'. You have to have dc3 now, and it has to be a girl called Edith!

I love it - it's a family name and the latest bearer is my six year old niece. But yes, it nearly always gets shortened to Edie (love that too).

Me too, which is why I picked it - I have no non-MN connections with the name whatsoever. (Though a rather prolific MNetter told me it is her name in RL.)

I think it's quite a trendy name in particular circles. Not sure I like it though.

very fashionable now - and quite pretty IMO

I had a friend called Edith but she was Hungarian and it was pronounced "Ed-eet"

It's lovely- very elegant and cool fashionable rather than over fashionable (eg Lily, Lucy, Isobella)
