Does anybody like the name Nuala? I love it, but my partner says its horrible.
We already have a Lydia, if I cant talk him round I might go for Maisie, Mabel, Martha or Ruthie.

DisenchantedPlusBump Fri 25-Jul-08 19:41:28

Pronounced Noola?

DisenchantedPlusBump Fri 25-Jul-08 19:42:02

She she will get that all her life!

I prefer the other names

yousaidit Fri 25-Jul-08 19:43:40

I love it! What if your dd has blond hair when born? Call her Fionnuala (Pron 'Finoola') it means Nuala with blond hair! It's onour short list!

Turniphead1 Fri 25-Jul-08 19:44:06

I am Irish and the name is very common there (obviously, what with it being Irish). In fact there is a comedy band called The Nualas.

I have to say I am not that keen. I prefer Maeve ("mave") if you want something Irish and similar to the other girl's names you've listed (all of which I like save Ruthie)

Love Nuala! Also Fionnuala because she could be Finn or Nuala. But my DP overruled me on this one too. Sometimes he has no vision.

janeite Fri 25-Jul-08 20:08:14

No - but I love Lydia! Maisie, Mabel and Martha are all nice too and Ruth but not Ruthie.

zippitippitoes Fri 25-Jul-08 20:09:24

not ruthie just ruth

out of those i think nuala is the best what about naomi

cthea Fri 25-Jul-08 20:11:22

Naomi is v nice. Good choice with Lydia too.

meglet Fri 25-Jul-08 20:12:23

I like it, but have only heard it before because I thought it was a name 'created' for a range of Yoga clothes (poosibly puma or addidas)? I didn't know it was a proper name.

Out of the others I like Mabel best.

janeite Fri 25-Jul-08 20:12:34

Naomi is a fab name - one of my dds has Naomi as one of her names.

Heated Fri 25-Jul-08 20:13:09

Love Mabel and Ruth.

Desiderata Fri 25-Jul-08 20:13:37

It doesn't look right. It looks like the spelling's wrong.

AbbeyA Fri 25-Jul-08 22:41:45

I don't like it. I like Maisie and Martha but not Mabel. Ruth is fine but can't stand Ruthie.

RuthT Fri 25-Jul-08 22:45:05

I am called Ruth and can only bear Ruthie from my brother, mum and dad - and maybe my husband. I do like Nuala.

Not many people called Ruth so it is quite a good name and not met anyone who dislikes it (mind you you would they tell me anyway!)

Not sure about the others

mylovelymonster Fri 25-Jul-08 22:48:43

Love Mabel - reminds me of miss mabel in 'an ideal husband', played by minnie driver, alongside the dashing rupert everett.

How about Cecily?

bosch Fri 25-Jul-08 22:49:43

Friend is called Nuala and her dh shortens it to 'Noo' - obviously she really loved it when the noo-noo did all the cleaning up on the teletubbies. Your dd may not mind that though grin
Do like Nuala best of your choices.

ButterflyMcQueen Fri 25-Jul-08 22:50:11

Nuala divine stick with it

Capital Fri 25-Jul-08 22:50:31

I quite like Nuala though it's weirdly complicated to look at written.

Like Mabel, and Martha is very sweet.

pointydog Fri 25-Jul-08 23:04:03

I trhink Ruth is lovely

Hulababy Fri 25-Jul-08 23:05:17

I an not so keen on Nuala. However, I love the name Martha.

Tommy Fri 25-Jul-08 23:08:22

I like Nuala - if you are Irish
DS3 was going to be Lydia so I like that
Ruth - rather than Ruthie please - you can always call her Ruthie if you want but let her be Ruth officially
Martha is my niece so also like that
Not keen on Mabel
Don't like Maisie at all I'm afraid

nooka Fri 25-Jul-08 23:10:28

If your dh thinks it is horrible there is not much point thinking about it really.
