Katelyn is made up surely? I would just think they don't know how to spell Caitlin. Caitlin is really nice.

i think that caitlin was originally pronounced kathleen so katelyn is actually more accurate.

Thanking you most kindly for that unanimous vote. Am biting my tongue HARD today, but I had to find out if I was alone in my opinion. Seems not.

Well, the Caitlin I know pronounces her name rather like Kathleen, so Katelyn wouldn't really do it.

I had no idea it was ever not spelled Caitlin, but found out today when a birthday invitation arrived in the post for dd2.

I thought 'Who's Katelyn????'

It took ages to dawn on me.

Technically Katelyn is probably correct as Caitlin should be pronounced Kathleen, as other posters have said.

But I prefer Caitlin pronounced Katelyn. It's what I'm used to.

Yes, I always thought that the name Caitlin was actually Kathleen, in the original Gaelic spelling. So it isn't 'Kate-Lynn' at all, however you choose to spell it.

Caitlin is not pronounced "Kathleen" although they are very related (Kathleen is essentially the anglicisation of Caitlin).

Caitlin is actually pronounced "Catch-leen" or "Cawtch-leen" in Irish depending on what area you are from.

However, it is now standardly pronounced "Kate-lin" by lots of people, including a lot of Irish people (but probably not native Irish speakers)

I am Irish living in England and have considered Caitlin as a name. I would pronounce it Katelin probably.

Katelyn is just a phonetic variation of the name. Nothing wrong with that per se - like spelling Niamh "Neve" or Siobhan "Shivon". It's a free world. Not culturally correct, but hey.

It is the Gaelic for Kathleen - but it's pronounced a bit differently isn't it? More like Kat'leen?

Thanks Turniphead - a far more comprehensive and accurate answer.
