Boy name Misha?

What do you think? Distant Russian connection but mostly just really like the name, plus it would be a nod to Michael (family name on both sides). Siblings have more traditional but still not super common English names, is it too different?

Mischka (various spellings) is often a girl’s name in the UK, so no I wouldn’t as a full name. In Russia Misha and Miscka are diminutives of Mikhael, I don’t think anyone would be called either on the birth certificate.

You could either go Michael nn Misha, so he can ditch it if it doesn’t work for him

Or something like Alexander nn Sacha

I have a friend Mischa (m) and think it's a lovely name! He was the butt of a few jokes at school but no more than anyone else (for being ginger/tall/short etc- teenagers can be foul!)

I like the name, makes me think of Misha Collins (Supernatural).

Michael nicknamed Misha is a nice idea but we have a couple of Michaels in our fairly close family so it might get a bit confusing, plus I hate Mick, Mickey, Mike, etc.

I do really like Sacha/Sasha but already used Alexander for DS middle so it would feel like doubling up.

@Ulelia Thanks, I’d be interested to hear what the jokes were about? Anything particular to the name?

Love Mischa for a boy.

Also love the Polish diminutive Mietek.

Time to reclaim it as a boys name! (Joking)

I think it's a lovely name, it does have a slightly feminine soft sound, but I love that in boys names (my favourites include Gabriel, Sacha, Lucien...). I wouldn't worry about it being seen as a girls name, many names are unisex and Misha Collins (as mentioned by PP) has increased visibility of it as a boys name. Some posters will say it makes a child a target for bullying, but I disagree, a name will not be the reason some is picked on unless it is really daft or rude, they can be a tool used to bully, but rarely the initial cause. Many common names can be used to target kids but it hasn't put people off, e.g. smelly Elly.

Without knowing the other names it's hard to know how well they fit - I would be surprised if Kevin and Derek had brother called Misha, but not if William and Bethan did. I wouldn't feel it is too Russian even for me (0 Russian heritage).

I like it. I knew a Mischa when I was at school, he had siblings with more traditional but not very common names and they matched.

It’s a lovely name. Cute diminutive of Mish too.

Yes Mish is sweet!

I don’t want to share the sibling names for privacy sorry but they’re not top 100 but still well known and fairly classic. I think they work OK.

Thanks everyone for the reassurance. It’s definitely going on the list!

I really like it, especially the nod to Michael.
You might also consider Meshach (MEE-shack), it's biblical and a bit of a wildcard but might have the sound you like, or could have Misha as a nn.

^ oops, I didn't realise that Meschach is just another form of Michael anyway.

What were the jokes about?
Considering the name for my baby.

Sorry for delay! A few jokes about it being a girly name, short for Michelle, etc. Nothing nasty!

Micah could be another possibility.

I see, thank you Smile makes sense. doesn't seem to be unusual these days with so many unusual names around. I'd say Michelle would be rarer than misha Grin
