Does he have a grandad or family member you'd like to honour?

Lovely name (though I have a Joshua so am biased!). I think as Joshua is 3 syllables and your surname is 3 syllables I would go for a 1 or 2 syllable name to stop it being too much of a mouthful. What letter does your surname begin with to avoid spelling out anything with his initials, and are there any family names you’d use? Do you want another classic/biblical name?

@miltonj well we have both grandads to potentially honour but can't deal with the headache of upsetting one. Our girls' middle names aren't named after anyone per se

I think you need something with fewer syllables as Joshua and your surname are quite long.
Joshua James
Joshua Jack (risk of being nn "JJ" with those though?)
Joshua Mark
Joshua Seth
Joshua George
Joshua Finn / Flynn
Joshua Max

Would both grandfathers name flow? Or do you definitely want only one middle name?

My Joshua is a Joshua Benjamin
So is a friend of ours!
(We found it out when we got talking about middle names one day)
One goes by josh and the other by j (it’s been his nickname since birth)
It’s a name that goes well with most names to be honest

Ah yes it's a mine field isn't it?
I went with my own grandmas name for dds middle name, less chance of upsetting anyone as I only have the one grandma and husbands grandmas wouldn't have minded (as far as I know) Grin
