Hello, please can I have opinions on the following names:

Joni: love but can't tell if it's old fashioned, or maybe it's more Joan that has that vibe. There will definitely be an old-fashioned type middle name so not sure if need something more modern as contrast.

Autumn: love this but don't like any of the nicknames really although that's not really a deal breaker I know.

Vivienne: would probably mainly go by Vivi. Something holding me back on this one but not sure what!

Sapphire: absolutely love this but have had several people say it's a stripper name. Would probably use Saffy/Sapphy day to day.

Thanks!

Oh I love Joni. Are you a Joni Mitchell fan? I picture an American teen in the 1950s hanging around the diner dreaming of the bright lights of the big city.

I also like Vivienne. Vivi is so cute.

Autumn doesn't do it for me and Sapphire is a bit too razzmatazzy, bit too Danielle Steel heroine. I like Saffron though.

Joni and Vivienne are both beautiful. Autumn is so-so. Sapphire is awful.

I actually love all your names especially Joni- I love the Joni Mitchell 70’s ish vibe. It’s really cool and cute
Also like Autumn!

Vivienne is lovely. I like the others but that's my favourite.

Your gut instinct about Sapphire is right.

Of those names, Vivienne is the best.

Really like Joni. Like Saffy as a diminutive but prefer it for Saffron. Not too keen on Autumn and ‘Viv’ really puts me off Vivienne.

I love Saffron, it's one of my favourite names ever but sadly DH has vetoed it. I think Saffy is the name I really wanted and I thought Sapphire was the way of getting to it (don't want to just name her Saffy) but I don't think I would actually use it because it always gets a negative reaction!

@SnakeyTakey I do like Joni Mitchell but wouldn't call myself a huge fan, it's more the name I love and exactly the vibe you describe! Like how it's vintage but cute at the same time. I get the same vibe from Vivi. I'll probably always get asked this if we choose this name.

@Cbeebiesrehab Viv really puts me off too 😆 maybe that's what I can't put my finger on not being sure about it!

Joni is looking like the front runner at the moment which is the way we are swaying too and it's definitely DH's fave.

Joni - Love this name! It would definitely be on my list too, my only reservation might be that some people might read it as Johnny. I’ve also seen the Joanie spelling used which I guess is a bit clearer but somehow doesn’t look as cool as Joni.
Autumn - I quite like this as you don’t hear it often. Although there are lots of other Nature type names that I prefer, like Hazel, Fern, Rose, Violet.
Vivienne - This has a more classic feel than your other choices. I would prefer the Vivien spelling though as it’s less fussy.
Sapphire - Not keen on this to be honest. Saffron, nn Saffie would be better. Or even Emerald, nn Emmie would be stunning. Good luck

I love the name Sapphire but have woried if people would think this.

I just saw your update, you could also have Safiya, nn Saffy.

Love Joni. Don't like any of the others. Viv is a middle aged aunt, I deeply dislike the name. Autumn has rubbish shortenings I agree. Sapphire is not a name many people could pull off easily.

You could always use Safiya with the diminutive Saffy which is beautiful and seems totally different to Sapphire.

What about Seraphina with nn Saffy? And there's Safiya (although think that might be predominantly used by Muslim families)

sorry, didn't notice that @Cbeebiesrehab and @DotDotDotDotDot had already suggested Safiya.

@Thehouseofmarvels it's annoying isn't it! How come Ruby is ok but Sapphire is always a stripper name, ha!

@DotDotDotDotDot I love Emerald, nickname Emmie, I'm sure my DH didn't like this but I'll run it past him again...

I hadn't thought about people saying Johnny, I figured most people know who Joni Mitchell is so would know how to pronounce it but I guess after a certain generation maybe not. I agree Joanie loses the cool vibe of it and autocorrect keeps wanting to change it to Joanne so worried people would think it was that.

I do like Safiya but it doesn't go with our other daughter's name at all unfortunately.

@SnakeyTakey I find Seraphina a little fussy, I do like Seraphine though but not sure enough to use it.

Agree with all this! Joni is a great name and sounds fresh.

I can't even use Ruby because of something ( long story). I might use Emerald, but why is Emerald ok and Sapphire stripper lol

Thehouseofmarvels · 22/07/2021 12:38

If you really wanted Sapphire you could have 2 very traditional middle names, Elizabeth ect. She could always use them if she was very conventional as an adult.

Report
SnakeyTakey · 22/07/2021 12:42

Yes it is funny that Ruby is totally unremarkable whereas Sapphire is eyebrow raising. Personally I think Pearl is the worst of those gemstone names. I always picture a Pearl as being hard as nails.

Sorry hit send too soon. I know what you mean about Pearl, not a fan. I guess Diamond is another one that would be frowned upon.

@Thehouseofmarvels good suggestion for middle names just not sure if I have the guts to use Sapphire if it's such a negative reaction everywhere. I wouldn't want it to have a negative effect on her life in the future with jobs etc and people making assumptions. That's a shame you can't use Ruby if you like it!

Joni is great. I would have considered it but my friend has one (she'd be about 7 now I think and I've never heard of another). Personally I prefer Joanie but it's great either way.
