It’s not bad but seems quite American to me. I haven’t met any Hudsons so wouldn’t say it’s popular.

Not keen on the "Hud" part personally - sounds doughy. It clearly means "Hugh's son", so would you consider classic Hugh? Or Hugo if you want something more trendy sounding? If it's the cool factor/surname vibe you want then Heath is very nice. Or if you like the "un" sound of Hudson, then Harrison, Jensen, and Sullivan have a nicer sound imo.

DS is friends with one (preschool age). He is a sweet boy but I always think ‘river’ when I hear his name.

I’m not keen, but then I don’t tend to like surname-type names in general. It has American or servant vibes (Upstairs Downstairs). It’s fine.

Marmite name IMO. I first came across it a decade ago and didn't like it and would never use it. The parents referred to im as Udson, consciously dropping the H as it was apparently posher . Another child was Rafe (pronounced Raff-ay-uh). The children's surname was a mash-up of both parents and double-barrelled to boot. Seemed like too much effort to me.

I think river or missionary. I like it, its unusual without being 'unique', easy to pronounce and suits different ages imo

@Adventing this was my take on it too, I know it’s not for everyone but I’m not a big fan of traditional names. Reassuring to see someone else makes the same kind of associations anyway :)

I don’t think so! It certainly flows through some very beautiful parts of NY state.

I suppose I don’t think of rivers as inspiration for names, in the same way I wouldn’t use Thames / Mississippi / Seine. Shannon would be the exception, perhaps.
