Baby names

Lucas?

I can't decide on a name. Me and my partner like a name for a while and then we decide we don't want to use it for some reason

At the moment the name is Lucas, but we're not sure as we don't want his name to be shortened to Luke when he's a baby (when he's older and at school etc it'd obviously be his choice).

Weve shortened our list and we also agree on: Finn, Thomas (but we can't use it), and Ryan. At the top is Lucas though.

Opinions please

Never known a Lucas to be shortened to Luke so that wouldn't be a worry for me.

Prefer Finn from your list but Lucas is perfectly good name too

Congratulations x

I've never known a Lucas be shortened. It's very popular though.

I would never think to shorten Lucas to Luke. I've never heard of it. No matter the age of the Lucas.
It would like Marcus becoming a MarkConfused.

Of your list of names I only like Ryan.

Lucas is nice. I know a Lucas. He's 18 and is never Luke.

I doubt Lucas would get shortened to Luke, it’s a completely different name. I really like Lucas though

I have a Lucas, he's 10 and never Luke.

I went to school with a boy called Lucas who was kindly nicknamed Mucus so beware of that!

I like Lucas. And Ryan.

Lucas is lovely, and it's generally pretty easy to set the nickname or lack of one when they are small.

How would your accent sound saying it? A character in a TV program has a Lucas and it sounds like mucus the way it's said out loud...

My DS is Lucas. It doesn’t get shortened. Not that popular in my area either, he’s the only one in his school.

I absolutely love Finn! If it wasn’t already taken in my family it would be my little boy’s name. Lucas is nice too but I’m a teacher and it’s becoming quite popular, I have one in my class just now. We always call him Lucas though, no nickname. I know Finn probably is with babies now too

Lucas is lovely - I doubt he'll get Luke unless he wants to as Luke feels like a separate name to most people imo.

Finn is okay, maybe slightly trendy but nice enough. Ryan isn't my taste (I think because it's a popular surname, I find it slightly downmarket as a first name, sorry).

I have a Lucas and we love it! Nobody has ever called him Luke yet. We have never met another one so although statistically it’s popular (top 20s), in reality I think it depends on where you live.

Of your other names, I also love but couldn’t use Thomas! I am not a fan of Ryan personally, and am less keen on Finn.

In case we have similar taste, other names we liked include Dominic, Ethan and Samuel. I also liked Sebastian and Joseph but couldn’t get them past DH.

Lucas is going to boom even more now with Zara's baby but it is still a nice name.

I like it.

I also like Flynn as an alternative to Flinn

I know a very lovely 28 year old named Lucas. I think the name is excellent and "Lucas" suits his very sweet personality.

BTW Lucas is not my child. He went to University with my DD and they have been friends ever since.

Lucas all the way. Don’t think it’s especially likely to be shortened. Great name.,

Finn is nice enough, but a lot of them about

Ryan awful and very downmarket

Lucas is a lovely name. I’ve known a few and they were not nicknamed Luke.
Only time I’ve heard that is from the tv show One Tree Hill

Lucas is nice. I personally like Luke as a nickname but I get that it would be annoying if you don’t like it. Finn, Thomas & Ryan are equally nice as well so maybe you could choose Finn or Ryan with Lucas for a middle name since you can’t use Thomas.

We have a Lucas shortened to Luke but he prefers Lucas.

I have a lucas, he is only 2 but no one has shortened it to luke as far as I know, it sounds nothing like it so why would they.

Lovely name. Couldn’t use it for DS as I associate it with the Lucas device which is a particularly brutal looking CPR machine. I suspect it’s the same for other people working in the ambulance service!

Lucas is a lovely name, and doesn’t get shortened to Luke. Well, at least, certainly not while he’s a baby / toddler and you’re in control of his name.

I think it’s still unlikely to get shorted to Luke when he’s older - unless he expressly wants it to be.
