When did people decide on their names?

I’m only 13 weeks and we don’t plan on finding out the sex, but we have a name for each which we are 99% sure we will use.

Was anyone the same and changed their mind last minute? I love both names I just hope I don’t over do them in my head Grin

With both mine we had names and then in the last few weeks of pregnancy changed our minds entirely. Your mileage may vary!

We had endless lists of names that were absolute noes for one or the other of us, and the poor child only got named at 3am the morning after he was born when I texted DH going "Yes, he does look like a [name]".

Friends of mine took a week to settle on a name, drove their mothers nuts.

First one - by 10 weeks.
Second one - by 20.

Once we had decided we didn’t need to revisit the conversation.

I decided on my favourite name yeeeeears ago. Met now DH, got him on board, got pregnant and now I’m 37 weeks and doubting myself and he’s been calling the bump by that name for the past 8 months. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’m 21 weeks and found out the gender at 16 weeks. We always had a girls name so didn’t have to think about that one but didn’t have a boys. I said we’d wait til we knew the gender since there was no point thinking of boys names if it’s a girl anyway and we know the name but it’s a boy so I’ve spent the last 5 weeks going round and round every possible boys name 😂 I’ve had the definite name about 3 times now then it’s changed yet again. We’ve got the final few names so I don’t know if we’ll get any further than this before he’s born. Might just have to wait til we see him!

It was between 7-12 weeks we settled on a name for either sex. I am 30 weeks now and we're still pretty set on them (don't know sex either). I do try to reflect on the names occasionally to make sure I still like them. I do wonder since it was quite easy if when the baby comes we'll have a change of mind or think it doesn't feel right with the baby.

Use it! Just think how much you’ll kick yourself if you don’t and someone else does in 6 months time 🤦🏼‍♀️

We had a top 3 names for each sex. DS1 got the top of the list name within minutes of being born.
DS2 ended up with a name that had previously been completely vetoed because as soon as I saw his face I knew it was his name.

We didn't decide on DS1s name until he was born but had a short list of 3. DS2 was named as soon as we found out the sex and it stayed the same the whole time.

Girls name, pre pregnancy. Boys name by 8 weeks. But we chose family names so wasn't too tough.

About 10 hours after she was born. We didn’t know the sex beforehand and the none of the names on our girls shortlist suited her - her name just popped into my head and I like to think she chose it herself :)

Hit return too soon!

With my son, he was named straight after birth - we only had one name on our boys list and thankfully it suited him, so that was that!

Ds’ name was decided at around 8 months pregnant.

Dd1’s name was decided straight away as we were going to use the name we’d have used if ds was a girl. I changed my mind the night before she was born as I had a sudden change of heart. I’m so glad I did change my mind.

Dd2’s name was agreed on the night we decided to try for a baby (it was always my favourite girl’s name but ex didn’t like it - dd2 was with a new partner who is now my husband and luckily he loved the name too.

Dd3’s name was chosen at around 8.5 months pregnant but after she was born I wasn’t sure it was the right name. We tried a few different names out but none felt right so we went back to our original choice when she was around 4-5 weeks old. Definitely the right choice and I can’t imagine her being called any of the other names we considered.

We decided on the names just after the birth, we hadn't got a list or really discussed it.

1st baby didn't find out gender, but thought midwife had let slip girl by accident at appointment so focused more on girls names. Had a boy, didn't like any names on our shortlist, named eventually when 8 days old.

2nd baby found out gender and had name we were 98% sure on. He did not suit it at all. Finally named when 13 days old.

We are not having a third as we can't go through naming another human. We are terrible at it.

We loosely discussed names from second trimester onwards but we only really settled on two lots (as we didn't know the sex) a couple of weeks before they arrived. We didn't decide the spelling til she was about 2 weeks old.

I’m only 9.5 weeks so still time to change yet but we’ve been set on our boys name since before I got pregnant (we tried for quite a while!) and I’m 99.99% sure that’s what we’ll use. We have two girls names we love, but nowhere near 100% set on any one name yet. Not like there’s a rush yet 😂

With dd we found out at her sex 18 weeks. We had two girls names and 1 boys name we liked (I was convinced she was a girl so I agreed to the boys name as I didn't think we'd use it). As soon as we walked out of the scan my dh called her by the name I liked the lost and that was her name from then on.

With ds we were both convinced he was a boy from the start and had one name that we both loved. At the 16 week scan if he had turned out to be a girl I think he'd still have ended up with the same name as it was just what felt right.

We had a girl name before conception. We never agreed a boy name - luckily it was a girl!

We had a lot of trouble deciding middle name though and dithered until we were literally outside the registry office. I'm really glad we decided on the name we chose.

EdgedInBlue · 30/03/2021 22:44

I'd liked the name for YEARS prior to having DS but it was only properly decided on at about 28 weeks.
I got extra scans fir medical reasons and if I'd had to go by the 20 week scan I would have had a girls name ready instead

MooseBreath · 30/03/2021 22:46

First name was chosen (with about 95% certainty) at around 7.5 months pregnant. Middle name was chosen (with about 50% certainty) at just before 9 months pregnant. Name was finalised when DS was a week old.

Early on , around 3 months for ds1. Ds2 we had a shortlist but not certain until he was born and because he was very ill we needed to chose a name quickly. The midwives gave me a baby book to look through and one of the names on the shortlist had a very special meaning so that was the one we chose.

We were pretty set from 20 weeks (DP didn't want to discuss names till then due to previous miscarriage, plus that's when we found out the sex), we had a shortlis but both agreed on our favourite. We didn't fully decide and announce until a couple of weeks after she was born though - we are both terrible at making decisions and always doubt our taste. It was definitely the right name though Smile

We had 2 girl's names and 2 boy's names from quite early on. Then found out we were having DD, so agreed that we would just wait to see which name she "looked like" when she was born. But a week before she arrived, I decided on her name (and luckily it suits her)
