Baby names

Alyssa, too similar to Alice?

So I really like the name Alyssa for a girl. Someone I'm close to has named their baby Alice. Honestly, would you still use the name, even though they are quite similar? I don't want to seem like I'm "copying" or lacking imagination.

I may be overthinking this... Grin

Too close for siblings, but if Alice is just the child of someone you're close to then I would say it's fine.

Exactly this.

Its fine, nice name. Like PP said it's too close for siblings and possibly cousins of a similar age but anything else is fine.

If it's just someone you know, no problems.

We have an Ada and Alyssa who are toddler cousins and their names are constantly muddled, Alyssa and Alice would be worse for muddling but I don't think cousins with those names would seem like copying just a similar sound coincidentally

Depends how close you are - I know they are written differently but they sound really similar. If it's someone you know from work fine. If it's your best mate probably not. If the kids spend time together they are going to be constantly confused until one of them ends up picking a different name anyway.

While they look different enough when written, they are quite soundalike - so if you see Alice very often I probably wouldn't use Alyssa, as I think it will be a bit confusing. See them less often? I think Alyssa is fine in that case, even if it's a very close friend/family member.

No it’s fine! I wouldn’t think you were copying the name Alice as they are quite different IMO

There’s also tonnes of Evie’s, Edie, Evelyns etc! Quite common for them to be lots of similar names around

Too close for siblings and probably too close for cousins as well.

Fine if Alice is a friend's child.

I think it's fine. They actually sound quite different to me with the emphasis on different parts of the word.

I think it's fine since it's just a friend. Alice is a lovely, but popular, name. She won't get through life not meeting any others iyswim. So don't see why this would be an issue, even if you used Alice!

That said, I remember my NCT friend being miffed someone used Emma, when she had just used Emily 🙄. I did think...ffs Emily? It isn't as if she's used your super rare baby name.
