Hipster names

I keep seeing references to names being ‘hipster’ on here so just out of curiosity what would you say are hipster names of 2020/21?

It seems I’m quite partial to a hipster name judging by some of the comments on MN. So would be helpful for ideas too!

I find that if you look at the top 100 Australian baby name lists they often have what are considered "hipster names" over here

Some names in the Aus top 100 in 2020 for boys are Felix, Fletcher, Ari, Hunter, Archer,

For girls Riley, Peyton, Indiana,

I find that they can be ahead of the curve with popular names, for example Arlo seemed to become popular over there before it peaked over here.

I'm not 100% on what a hipster is (a cool, young, city parent?) but I'm thinking names likes:

Ah, ok. An astonishing number of parents seem to make this mistake with very common names. I'm a Rebecca. My parents swear blind they thought it was 'pretty and uncommon'. I was born in the 80s ...

I have 2 friends who both called their children Amelia in the last 8 years and said they didn't know any others at the time! Same with an Olivia.

I have nothing against popular names. They're usually popular for a reason. But don't people look at lists?!

Oh my gosh, yes to Beau (or Bo?!). I once met a hipster on the central line (the most hipster of tube lines?) who had a son called Beau.

To me hipster is not popular but less mainstream and like someone mentioned less name like so herbs, animals, nature or word related. But maybe I'm thinking hippy haha.

I guess the true definition is something on the edge or the beginning of being cool ahead of the pack right?

I don’t see Beau as a hipster name at all. I’m originally from Essex and a lot of the glam TOWIE type mums there have boys called Beau.

Hipster names to me are earthy, nature inspired or surfer style. Names like Arlo, River, Juniper, Saxon, Atticus, Cosmo, Bodhi, Fern, Zen, I could go on.

I like most of the above though. I’d rather have a son called Beau than a William for example. It’s just down to personal preference.

Quite a lot of the names on the long lists I see as quite classic? At least they were on our list and I am very, very uncool.

For me I think it's more cool, edgy names or unusual nature names. Or the ultimate in hipster is named after a 'cool' musician. So Bowie, Joni, Zeppelin, Hendrix. Something like that.

Girls all have a very soft sound to them whilst boys are heavily nature based/hippy feel.

@babynamelover my daughters name is among them! Currently ttc again and rather than post ‘what goes with...’ I think the hipster thing is more helpful. I just seem to be drawn to these types of names.

I always thought hipster was someone trying to be cool and edgy for the sake of appearing different from everyone else. That would make hipster baby names the names that are about the parent expressing how quirky they are.

No the word hipster isn't always pejorative actually @LolaSmiles . In London, it is used in a gentle way to describe a sub group of people. A bit like emo or goth. Sometimes it is taken as a compliment as well.

I think what you are describing is maybe "try hard".
