Baby names

Emma and Emily

I love the name Emily for future DD but my name is Emma and I don’t know if it matters that they are similar. Is this only an issue with siblings?

I think it's okay. Siblings would be a no go though

I personally wouldn't but I don't think it's terrible.
What about Millie instead?

That would be fine. My DD1 and I have slightly similar names. They are both derivatives of the same name. No-one has ever mentioned it.

I think it's fine. I would do it. As you say, not with siblings.

It’s up to you, but personally I wouldn’t do this. I’d feel silly walking into baby groups and saying “I’m Emma and this is Emily”.

Totally fine as mother and daughter

I think it's fine, as long as you are Emma and not Em to most people.
The ending sound is completely different.

I'm with Kitten

It wouldn't be as bad as siblings, but I think it's a bit daft, considering there are gazillions of names out there. I also think it will be a bit confusing for your parents / PiLs, and your siblings and anyone else who is likely to end up knowing you both very well.

I think it's a bit silly.

It wouldn't be terrible, but I tend to agree with @KittenCalledBob. Have you thought about Amelia? Similar sound but would work better I think. Or Camilla / Camille, nn Milly.

it's fine. go for it you'd regret not using it I think

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/11/2020 19:52

I wouldn't do it. I shared my first initial with my DF and that caused enough confusion.

Do you every get called Em because your DD will almost certainly get called this too.

StripyTigerTail · 22/11/2020 19:58

Hmmmm no, I wouldn't do this myself and think if I met a mum and baby called Emma and Emily it might get a little confusing?

That said, not the end of the world and the people who matter will get used to it.

I think you can just about get away with it for Mum and Daughter as the end sounds are different enough - but she will have to be known by her full name or Milly (if either of you get Em/Emmie it would be confusing!)

Why not. Plenty of kids out there named after their dads!

I know a mum emma and her Dd has it as a middle name.

Report
StripyTigerTail · 22/11/2020 20:56

Oh God, no I wouldn't name a son after DH either! But yes, people do it. In Scotland, I remember a colleague having a baby called Iain Harry or something, but she called him Harry day to day. The Iain part was some longstanding family tradition apparently. Not my cup of tea at all, but yes people do it.

I know an Emma who called her daughter Emily, not an issue at all.

I knew a Louise who called her daughter Eloise. Thought that was very odd

I think it’s weird and kind of ego centric to pretty much name your child after yourself.

I think the same when men do it as well before anyone mentions that.

BookishZen · 22/11/2020 22:13

I’m always Emma, our family has never shortened names so would always use full names.

Thanks everyone so far, it’s interesting that it’s so divided. I was thinking the same thing that there are so many sons with the same name as their dads.

I think it sounds absolutely fine and wouldn’t have a problem with it.

I don't see it as a problem at all.

I can't see the issue. I'd do it.

I don't see it as a problem. In fact, it's quite nice. If ds1 had been a girl, he was going to be called Rosie, which can be a short version of my name.

I don't see it as a problem. I know an Andrea who had an Anna and we didn't realise for years!
