Partner and I both like Fearne/Fern, but I can't think of any nice nicknames for it. Does anyone have suggestions? Not Ferney!
Also, do you think it's too similar to friends 4yo who we would see really very often as they're next door who is Finn?

Hey @MarvEll my names Fern. When I was younger I got called Ferny/Fernie. My mum nicknamed me Fingers Fern as I always trapped them! Since high school years I was always called Fern. I was the only Fern in my schooI. Also dont think Finn and Fern are too close, if it helps I have a dog called Flinn smile Fern and Flinn.
Good luck!

Ps. I do often get Ferne, Fearne, Fearn, Furn (I know confused) x

TotalBitch Sun 22-Nov-20 11:30:02

Fifi? I love the name Fern.

MarvEll Sun 22-Nov-20 11:35:37

@Fern92 really helpful thanks! If Flinn isn't too close then we should be ok. I hadn't thought of spelling it Fernie. I have a habits of adding 'ie' onto everything 😄

I think it's such a pretty name!

@TotalBitch yes Fi or Fifi is what my partner suggested too. He loves it, but I'm not so sure.

The other name I'm thinking is Maddie / Madeline. I like the nickname, but not the full name!

My sons nickname has nothing to do with his actual name and everything to do with a jumper he had as a baby.

You might mind something else evolves but it's such a short name it doesn't really need a nick name.

Having said that, Fifi is nice, especially if you go for another F name in the middle.

WaxOnFeckOff Sun 22-Nov-20 11:53:10

Also prefer Meredith to madeline. Merrie or eadie is nice for short.

YukoandHiro Sun 22-Nov-20 12:01:10

My surname is a variation of this name. They will be "Ferny" throughout school and beyond and there's nothing you can do about it. Possibly also "disco inferno". If you don't like it you probably want to avoid the name...

Nell96 Sun 22-Nov-20 12:02:23

I love the name Fern (spelt that way). It's short so I don't feel it needs a nn. And no, it's not too similar to Finn.

Frazzled2207 Sun 22-Nov-20 12:02:54

I like Fern but I think she would inevitably end up Fernie. Both my kids have names where we’ve ended up using -ie at the end unintentionally! That said it’s only us parents who use that.

DuckonaBike Sun 22-Nov-20 12:05:48

Bracken?

grin sorry couldn’t resist. Don’t worry, nicknames just evolve.

Kenana Sun 22-Nov-20 12:13:55

Fernanda?
Ferinita?

Maddie can be short for
Madonna
Magdalena
Madison

Oneandabean Sun 22-Nov-20 13:00:59

I don’t think it needs a nickname as it’s short anyway, and they tend to evolve on their own. The only one I can think of if Effie maybe?

MarvEll Sun 22-Nov-20 14:49:21

@YukoandHiro I quite like inferno! 😂

But yes, everyone's right that nicknames will come on their own I guess and I don't need to think of them. I was just wondering about affectionate terms, but as you say this doesn't have to be linked to the actual name! @Oneandabean I do really like Effie tho!

No suggestions, just wanted to say how much I love Fern!

Lizadork Mon 23-Nov-20 19:14:43

Could extend the name to Fernlea? That way Fern or Lea choice of nickname. If you love Maddie, maybe Madison.

user1493494961 Wed 25-Nov-20 10:47:20

I can't see the point of naming her Fearne and calling her Fifi. Madeleine is lovely, shortened to Maddie.

VenusClapTrap Wed 25-Nov-20 11:00:18

Fern is a beautiful name and doesn’t need a nickname. Something will evolve naturally when she’s here - Squeaky or Sausage or whatever. We called dd Gollum for a while when she was a baby because that’s what she looked like! grin

AfterSchoolWorry Wed 25-Nov-20 11:02:47

Fifi

FelicityPike Wed 25-Nov-20 11:04:51

Why does it need a nickname?
Why don’t people just use the name they give their child?

florascotia2 Wed 25-Nov-20 18:49:24

Fern is fine if you like plant names. It's short and doesn't need a nickname. As others have said, these evolve. You can't predict or choose them.
Fearne is not fine, at least IMHO. Sorry, but ...

MarvEll Thu 26-Nov-20 07:43:58

Thanks all! I think I agree with you and I won't worry about the nickname and see what plays out. I guess these things are very hard to predict. I really like Fern and so does my partner, so maybe we'll just go with that!
Now for a middle name... Haven't even thought about that yet!!

Why do you need a nickname for a one syllable name? Why do people give their kids names when they intend to call them something else? I picked my DS’s name because I like it and he’s only ever been called that. Why do you need another name?

Alarae Thu 26-Nov-20 07:56:43

My 8 month DD is often called Chubba, which is nothing like her actual name but very self explanatory! She's also called Beast, but that's more because of her monstrous appetite grin

I wouldn't push a nickname. Something will naturally come up.

andfurtively Thu 26-Nov-20 08:04:35

Why would you want a nickname? Fern is lovely. If she's called Fern then let her/he be called Fern
