What do you think of Sara

I really love the name pronounced Saara (a bit like Zara)not Sarah. I used to work with a lovely lady called this. I think it's very pretty and not used much. What do others think?

I have a friend who spells her name Sara but it's pronounced Sarah.....
I think you would forever have the Sarah/Sara/Zara debate.....

It is pretty but at least 50% of the time it will be pronounced Sarah, like Sara Cox. What about Zara?

I like it - has a bit of a Welsh feel to me. I actually know a Sara - she's Portuguese and lovely. I think I prefer Zara though, bit more unusual, less uncertainty around pronunciation.

I always pronounce Sara like you say and I think that's normal.
However I know one who spells it like that but pronounces it like Sarah so I think there are differences.
I prefer it to Sarah personally.

I'd just go with Zara. Sara will probably get Sarah quite lot. There is also Syrah, which I like.

I think you would be more likely to get the pronunciation that you prefer if you used Zara, as there is less likelihood of people adding their own interpretation of the name.

I think it's lovely. It's a different name to Sarah so I'm surprised anyone would pronounce Sara as Sarah tbh (although maybe I only know that because I'm welsh!)

I can't comment on the Welsh Sara but certainly Sara and Sarah are both forms of the same name - Sarah comes through the Hebrew and Sara via Greek from Sarai, wife of Abraham.

Sara Pascoe, Sara Cox, Sara Bareilles and both the Bob Dylan and Fleetwood Mac songs all use the 'sarah' pronunciation.

I would say Sara with a short ‘a’ not a long one as in Zara or an ‘air’ sound as in Sarah...

one of my close friends is called this. At school everyone would call her Sarah/Zara/Sahara so i am not keen on it. Prefer Sahara, Zara :)

I have a friend called Sara whose parents chose it wanting it to rhyme with Zara. Absolutely everyone pronounced it Sarah though so in the end her parents gave up and she's been known as Sara pronouned Sarah her whole life!

Whenever I meet a Sara for the first time (or as now on Zoom/telephone) I would always say it to rhyme with Zara, this is how all the girls pronounced it when I was at school back in the 70/80s.
However now it is just as likely to be pronounced to thyme with Sarah so I have to remember, it isn't hard.
Now that there are many names with different pronunciations and spellings I don't think it is an issue and if you like Sara I say go for it.
I have the most boring 70's name, only 1 way to say it but 3 ways to spell it. I have managed.

This is my mum's name and also my daughter's (named after mum) and I can't even put into words how much I love it. Most people call mum Sarah except for my late dad who always called her Sar-a and said it with such love. Such a special name I think.

In Wales you wouldn't have a problem with this. I now live in England and call every Sara I meet Sara (zara with a s) only to be told it's Sarah. Spell it Sarah then theyre completely different names!! So just depends on where you live. It's a shame

It would never occur to me to pronounce Sara the same as Sarah. To me, it self-evidently rhymes with Zara and is not at all confusing or ambiguous. Very nice name, more modern than Sarah, less outlandish than Zara. Connotations with The Little Princess.
