Baby names

Here I am again...

Hello all,

I'm 37+ 4 with my second baby. Sex unknown. It took us some time after DD1 was born to name her and I was keen to avoid that this time around but I'm still not happy with any of the names on our shortlist. DH is incredibly picky and it's been a frustrating process. I'd like a name that goes with the name of our first, which is Clara. We need both boys and girls names. I'm also quite picky, which doesn't help. Ideally, it'd have:

  • a nice meaning
  • a Latin origin, like Clara, though I appreciate that this may be tricky
  • a different initial from C (though I could go for a C name if it were a boy, I just don't like the idea of two Miss C Bumps getting their mail confused)
  • A different ending- no a endings please
  • No er endings; conflicts with surname
  • Not top twenty in the popularity stakes
  • Not so common I'll have grown up with three of four of them. The more uncommon the better, really. I'd never met a Clara before I used the name (though it's shot up in popularity in the six years since!)

Hoping someone has some suggestions we've not thought of yet!

Thanks everyone, I've been running them past DH, so far they've all got an outright no except for April, Grace and Hugo (he likes Hugo and finds April and Grace OK). Lots I like in there but he's a tough nut to crack on names (can't seem to tell me why he doesn't like certain names either- he just doesn't, apparently 🙄). Keep them coming if you've got any more.

Congratulations first off! 2 of our 3 DD have Latin origin names.
We have Seraphina (age 14 nn Fifi) & Octavia (age 12 nn Avie).
Our 3rd is Lorelei (Age 8 nn Lori). Their names are not to everyone’s taste but DH and I liked them. The girls love their full names as they’re quite unique.

The name that comes to mind is Lucy. Latin origin name meaning light. Sounds different to Clara although both two syllables and I think is about top 50 these days so not overly popular

If April is a possible yes, how do you like Avril?

Report

Avril is awful, sounds like Bovril.

April is an odd name for a September baby.

How about Dorothy.

I like pp's suggestion of Lucy. Neat, elegant, nice meaning.

Not all these names are to my taste, but they all have Latin origins and don't end in 'a':
Annabel/Amabel/Mabel
Amandine
Emily
Felicity
Fleur
Gillian/Julian/Juliane/Julie
Grace
Honor
Hilary
Isaure
Justine
Leonie
Lettice
Lilian/ Lily
Rosalie
Margaret
May
Melanie
Mirabel
Natalie
Pascale
Pauline
Prudence
Rosemary/Romy
Ruby
Silvie/Sylvie/Silvy
Valerie
Vesper
Violet
Vivien

Also, though these begin with 'C': Cecily, Clemency, Christine, Constance, Christabel, Corinne, Carine ...

And there are many French names of Latin origin that don't end in 'a', such as Antoinette, Adrienne, Angeline, Lucille, Ludivine, Severine, Sidonie etc etc

Thanks everyone. I've just run through the new submissions to the list and can add the following to the list of names that don't get an outright no from him:

  • Leo
  • Lucy
  • Hugo
  • Hugh
  • Gregory
  • Victor
  • Grace
  • Leah
  • Natalie
  • Phoebe

Thoughts? My worry with Gregory is that it shortens to Greg which makes me think of the bakery chain. Lucy is alright. Hugo makes me think of Bart Simpson's twin brother, obscure as that is. Or Hugo Horton. If anyone has a name that, based on the list DH hasn't said no to, they think he might like, please let me know regardless of my ideals list. I'm getting a bit desperate and am very willing to compromise.

If you and your DH like Victor for a boy, what about Victoria for a girl?
It's sufficiently different from Clara, I think, for the 'a' ending not to matter.
