A bit dated and very Irish.

I like it and considered it. Don't think it's dated (it is Irish though and usually with a fada on the last a)

Is there something wrong with a name being Irish, emmathedilemma?

Fine if you're Irish but was popular as Kieran in the mid 20th century, so is dated.

Ciarán! How sad is it that I've just worked out how to type with diacritic marks on my phone...
Every name I like is dated, it seems to be a real problem for me!

I like it especially spelt that way.

Names can be dated but come back into fashion.

I can only think of a couple of Arthurs roughly in my age group (both a few yrs older), one George etc.

Ciarán is probably fine, but Kieran/Kieron not. Kiran can be male or female and might be dated. He could be having to spell his name or correct people quite a lot.

Ciarán is such a lovely name. I'm in Ireland, I don't think it's dated.

I thought that with the fada, it was pronounced kee-rawn? Do you mean that pronunciation? I know some Ciarans (sans fada) and one Ciarán, who pronounces it kee-RAWN, with emphasis on the second syllable.

Very Irish! It is Irish, but what on earth does that matter?!

Love the name Ciaran! I don’t think it has dated at all (I’m also Irish). Agree with previous posts that the fada changes the pronunciation. Prefer it without tbh.

How are you pronouncing it OP? Where I am in Munster Kieran is Kier-an, Ciarán is Kier-AWN - the second syllable is emphasized in Munster so it's quite long drawn out. When I've been in Galway/Sligo though, I've noticed that people pronunce it a bit differently. Ciaráns and Kierans both seem to be KIER-awn, with the emphasis more on the first syllable (I think).
OK, I'm probably confusing things, sorry. It's a lovely name Smile

@LizzieAnt
He will be in London, England so it's actually probably best to keep the stress on first syllable/ spelling without fada tbh. I honestly hadn't really thought about whether to use the fada or not. My family in Ireland are Mayo based and cause I'm English born and bred I didn't really pick up on how much difference the fada makes to the sound of it, I was putting it more down to different accents Blush. But I still prefer the Ciaran spelling to Kieran a bit?
I like Rory, Ronan, Conor and Tadhg too but I think Tadhg will be wayyy too difficult to pronounce and his dad is a Conor so that's been vetoed

@TheDaydreamBelievers I like Caelan too but even though it's irrational I worry that the fact it means "slender" is too much pressure haha.

Tadhg is a tricky one for sure! I think one of the Saturdays names her son Tadhg a while ago though, so you never know!

I think Ciaran without the fada would be the way to go if you want the same pronunciation as Kieran, but don't like the Kieran spelling. Just based on the only Ciarán I know being very specific that he is kee-RAWN, not Kieran.

Keir is lovely too. I think it's Scottish? Dh vetoed for DS though as he said it sounds like a drink Grin. He isn't wrong tbf, but I don't care. Still love Keir! Love kirs too...and kir royales...Wink

It’s a bit dated- I know a few in their thirties (in Ireland) and then none younger. Similar to Darren or Gareth, it’s really had a moment in the 1980s.
