Not Freddie or Frederick, just Fred?

My dgs is Freddie and sometimes gets Fred. Makes him seem like a little old man tbh!!
Prefer Freddie. Bit less harsh for a dc!!

I think it's nice. Not too popular either, though I've known a few younger ones.

May get called Freddie by friends at school/some relatives - would that bother you?

(I would put Frederick on the Birth Certificate but that's just me not liking abbreviations as full names)

Honestly. It just makes me think of Fred West. That's it, it's ruined the name for me.

I don't like it, I don't like the look or sound, but then I don't like Freddie or Frederick either. One point in its favour is that at least it's not cutesy.

I always prefer a full name on the birth certificate even if it's hardly ever used. Imagine if your son became Prime Minister or a top judge or something and was just called Fred. Frederick is nice but I prefer Alfred for Fred.

Drop dead gorgeous.

Oj, but I do like it. He can be Freddie as a LO and Fred when he hits late teens?

It's very flat cap and whippet, I think.

Our littlest is Wilfred. We have shortened it to Wilf at the moment but I will be just as happy with Fred if he chooses when he's older. It's a good solid name.

The only Freds I know are Wilfreds

Good choice for a Bassett hound.

I wouldn’t worry about short names not being ‘official’ enough. Tony Blair didn’t have any problem.

I prefer Fred with Freddie as a nickname actually, over Frederick.

I absolutely love it!

It's one of my boy's nicknames even though his real name is nothing remotely related to it Blush and his real name is actually shorter than Fred.
I would definitely use it and put Fred on the BC but then all my five boys have the shorter versions of their names on their BC.

Love it!

Just why would you think naming your child Fred was a good idea?

Report
MillicentMartha · 22/04/2020 15:01

@Cosyblanky why ever not?

Report
MiniTheMinx · 22/04/2020 15:03

love it
DS2 has Frederick as his middle name. If it had been his first name I'd have called him Fred.

Happyralphymummy · 22/04/2020 15:09

I'd think it was short for something else and, suspect that you would be repeatedly asked what his full name is. I also now have "I'm too sexy for my shirt" stuck in my head.

I don’t like it. Nothing offensive about it but I prefer Frederick or freddie or Wilfred more

Because Milicent it has no meaning. I happen to think the meaning of a name is extremely important

I wouldn’t worry about short names not being ‘official’ enough. Tony Blair didn’t have any problem.

That would be because his name is Anthony Charles Lynton Blair.

@Cosyblanky - of course it does - it has the same meaning as Frederick!

I call my son Fred but he does have a full name too. In fact, I love the name Fred but I'm the only one that uses it.
