(51 Posts)We are registering our baby boy tomorrow morning & as yet he has no middle name so we need all the names thrown at us asap please!
Baby's first name is Arlo & surname is one syllable. We'd like names that sound nice with his first name but aren't too common. Help!

Choose a family name.
Do they need a middle name 🤷♀️
I would also choose a family name. Preferably a longish one, as the first and last names are pretty short. 3 or 4 syllables would flow best.
You don't need a middle name, I agree with Puds11. Especially if your'e just adding one for the sake of it.
I really do like Miles but I feel like his middle name would need to be longer as Arlo is short & surname is 1 syllable?
I also feel that because his first name is an old timey name that if we use a classic name then he'll sound like a little old man.
We used both family names that we wanted passed on for our first son in case we had a girl next. I feel like seeing as his brother has 2 names, it would be like we weren't fussed about Arlo if we didn't even bother to put in the effort to give him one.
I would saybyes you do need a middle name. My name is not even typical in my country and there is another one town away. The fact that the name doesnt sound like a common name makes people assume we are the same.
I was thinking it would be nice to pass on something from dad without using his actual name so River came to mind. What do we think of Arlo River?
Arlo sounds like a child's name not and old man's name @PetiteMostlySweet

Christ, it’s not hard. No-one but you and the child will really know what his middle name is.
Just give him one of his grandfathers’ names. Or great-grandfather.
I understand the anxiety of first names - I’ve been there. But middle names don’t matter, it’s just a nice opportunity to honour a family member. Shouldn’t be too hard to pick one. Anything goes with a simple name like Arlo.
James, John, George,
Are you in north London? We seem to have had an explosion of baby Arlos and Rafes up here in recent years.
Your Dad's name, your maiden name, a name you like but wouldn't find practical because you don't like the shortened version (Nathaniel, Sebastian, Christopher, Jonathan, Nicholas...) ...
Look further back in the family tree for either a name or an unusual surname. Your first son has a family name, it would be nice for your second son to have a family name too.
Arlo River is nice.
Arlo George
Arlo James
Arlo Christopher
Arlo William
Arlo Francis
Arlo Benjamin
❤️ Arlo Sebastian
Arlo Alexander
Arlo Jude
Middle names are important for some people though, me for example. I hate mine. It's surprising how much you end up using them/how much they get brought up as well. We're west London. I don't know of any Arlo's personally yet myself although a friend of DPs who is due next week is considering it. Not too popular here yet but starting to become a little more common.
I do like the idea of looking back further for a family name, that's a great idea!
I like Arlo River.
Other options...
Arlo Grahm
Arlo Martin
Arlo Shane
Arlo John
Arlo James
Arlo Rainn
Arlo Garrett
Arlo Cole
