Start using Mumsnet PremiumA Arabic/Western sister for Zara
(41 Posts)Soooo we need girls names that are either farsi origin/Arab Origins that also sound very western. We have a Zara and we are sort of keen on Jasmine but my mum has put me off it a little!
Any suggestions?
In my mind I have

Oh yes but my brother has a Sophia (we are not close and never met his children but still, may be stepping the line slightly with Sofia lol)
Sonia
Nadia
Lilia
Dalia

Yasmin
Yasmina
Sara (not pronounced like Sarah, but like Lara with an S)
Soraya
Ayesha
Roxanne
Zarina

My niece is one of the names mentioned and my dd is another of the names mentioned!
There’s this website I love that lists all names that work in English and Arabic:

^Origin of the name Leila:
Derived from the Arabic leila (night, dark beauty) or the Persian leila (dark-haired). Its use in England began with George Byon's poem "The Giaour" (1813).^
Natasha
Nathalie
Amber
Aaliyah
Saffron
Samira
Soraya
Nadia
Mira
Rosa - the word "rose" derives ultimately from Persian, I think.
Definitely Leila.
Or Ayesha.
If you’re willing to consider Mariam, would you consider Amira? I knew one and no one seemed to have too much trouble with her name.
I like Sufia instead of Sophia. Zeyna (usually Zeynap). Raya (from Soraya)
A good friend of mine has
Nakiya
Orianna
Leveda
Winona
Nakiya is my favourite of her names.
Amira
@Fullforcegale the SIL who took Mariám also has another daughter called Amira lol. My luck eh! Two of the names I would have chose lmao!
Don't be put off Jasmine, it's such a beautiful name and goes perfectly with Zara!
Mina
Layla
Tamara
Dina
Ada
Hannah
Jemima
Norah
Rosa
