We know they're identical so will either be bb or gg but don't know which.
We already have two boys called Rowan and Alistair
We've narrowed it down to a shortlist but can't pick which combination we want.

Euan
Calum
Joseph
Ruaridh

Louise
Niamh
Mhari
Mara

Perhaps this doesn't matter, but the 'correct' Scottish Gaelic spellings are:

Mairi (= name); Mhairi (=used when speaking to a person called Mairi). Pronunciations approx = Marry and Varry. It's the same name as English 'Mary' or French 'Marie'.

and

Ruairidh

In both names, you need the letter 'i' on either side of the letter 'r', because there is a Gaelic spelling rule that says 'broad (vowels) with broad, slender (vowels) with slender' . In Gaelic, vowels affect the way that the consonant next to them is pronounced, so they should be the same on either side of it. In Gaelic spelling, 'i' is a slender vowel, but 'a' is a broad vowel.

Many, many people who like Gaelic names choose to ignore these rules, however. Please excuse me, OP, if you know them already but prefer the spellings you have listed.

Calum and Joseph for boys definitely.

For girls I’d probably say Niamh and Mhairi but that depends on how you’re pronouncing Mhairi. If you go for the Mahri pronunciation it would be odd that the MH was pronounced differently in the two names

Joseph and Euan. Don't really like any of your girl's names, Louise is OK, if you like the name Maisie just go for that.

Just to reassure you, I have a baby Niamh and no one's had any troubles with the pronunciation or spelling (SE England). (Perhaps they are googling it before I arrive, no idea!)

notaregularmom Sat 11-Jan-20 12:28:56

Calum and Joseph
Louise and Niamh

Louise & Naimh - gorgeous names for 2 girls! Absolutely love Louise, if I had a girl that's what I would choose but, I'm a boy mama through & through!

camelsandcaramel Sat 11-Jan-20 12:39:09

Sorry, misspelt Niamh

MoonlightMistletoe Sat 11-Jan-20 12:44:25

Rowan, Alistair, Euan and Joseph

Calum and I agree with SummerLove2306.

Calum & Rhuaraidh
Mara and Niamh

It'll be confusing for people who don't see the name Mhairi written down if she's know as Maisy, but I'm all for confusing nicknames 😁

DivGirl Sat 11-Jan-20 19:13:46

Euan and Ruairidh (please spell it properly, someone above gave a decent explanation of why this is the correct spelling. I know the other way is more common but it doesn't make sense in Gaelic and if you're going to mess with the spelling you might as well go with Rory).

I'm struggling with your girls shortlist and can't choose. Niamh and Louise are my two favourites but they sound too rhyme-y (could just be my accent) so Mhairi (vah-ri) and Louise.

1Bobbinwinder Sat 11-Jan-20 19:20:41

Please use Mara. It's my favourite name!

Love Euan but it seems too close to Rowan to me. Also wanted to say I love Alistair.

I'd go Joseph and Ruaridh

And Mara and Niamh

doodlejump1980 Sun 12-Jan-20 19:55:36

Whichever you go for, give twin 2, the letter closest to the start of the alphabet so that they go first in school registers etc, twin 1 will always have the “I was born first” thing ha ha.
I would go Callum and Ruairidh. Or Mhairi and Niamh. Good luck! Twins are awesome! Ours are nearly 5!

Joseph and Euan
Mara and Niamh

Lovely names.

Really can't bear Calum as a name, and Ruaridh will spend his whole life spelling it.

At least Niamh is quite well known. I think Mhari will have a lot of pronunciation problems and indeed many people on here are disagreeing. Louise is just boring.

JRUIN Sun 12-Jan-20 20:52:14

Joseph and Louise. Two lovely and classic names.

Isadora2007 Sun 12-Jan-20 21:01:53

Acombination we want.
With Rowan and Alistair I’d avoid euan (repetitive of the “vowel-an” in rowan) or Ruaridh as one its spelt wrongly and two it’s another R name. I don’t like Joseph and callum together though- so what about another nice Scottish name like Iain or Ian instead of euan and Calum or Callum?

And like so many other have already pointed out Mairi is the correct spelling for “Marry” not Mhairi... especially if you used Niamh as you’d be using the mh as V in one but not the other. Louise and Niamh sound silly together with the double EE sounds.
Mairi and Niamh is nicest
Or Mara and Vaila if you fancy a Scottish alternative name?
Or Eilidh and Niamh is nice too. (Pronounced Aylay)

Louise
Niamh
Mhari
Mara

Astronica Sun 12-Jan-20 22:59:51

Calum and Ruaridh, or Euan instead of Calum. Joseph is okay but doesn't have the charm of the others to me.

Niamh and Mhari would be gorgeous. Second choice Mara with Niamh. Louise is a dull and dated name to me unlike the other 3.

Tayla9889 Mon 13-Jan-20 13:23:20

Joseph and Calum

Niamh and Louise

Mummyeyes Mon 13-Jan-20 14:35:54

Spell them however you like. I read Mháire as Wiry but would always ask.
