Baby names

Ada or Ayda?

What would you say is a better spelling? I would pronounce both the same, would you pronounce them differently?

Also, what's your thoughts on this name? It's one that's been in my mind for a few weeks now as potential for our baby girl due March 2020.

I would pronounce Ada as Aadaa and Ayda as Eeyda.

Ada is a lovely name! Very cool vintage feeling to it, as in Ava Gardner.

Lovely names. Like either spelling
I’d pronounce them slightly differently as above but don’t know if that’s right or now, I don’t know anyone with these lovely names

I prefer Ada. I pronounce Ada the same as Ava, just with a d. Ayda would make me wonder whether it was pronounced slightly differently, due to the unusual spelling.

Ada spelling

From your three responses then, the spelling I'd go for is Ada as I definitely am pronouncing that like Ava but with a d instead of v. Thanks for the kind comments about the name so far xx

Ada - very nice name.

Ayda - other people will pronounce it wrong her whole life. I have an unexpected y in my name and I can tell you this for a fact. Smile

@suckingdieselfella - hear what your saying and definitely makes sense!

@flymetothestars for Ada or Ayda?? I'm thinking Ada is the winner ??

Does anyone think it might be quite old fashioned? There's been a few rumbles of that when I've mentioned the name at my work etc

Nothing wrong with old-fashioned. Much better than a celeb name.

@suckingdieselfella thank you, totally agree lol. I think I'll keep this on the short list and pick another one or two that we like and then when she is finally here we can decide x

I know an Ada and an Ayda under 4, so even if its a little old fashioned its definitely having a moment :)

Ada.
Ayda looks like eyeda to me ( like a pirate would say ay ay captain)

I'd go for Ada. Keep it really simple and nobody can mess around with the spelling and pronunciation. It's a nice name, one of the few 'granny chic' ones I like.

Definitely Ada, I’d expect Ayda to be pronounced like Ida which is a different name in itself

TiceCream · 25/11/2019 17:01

I’d say Ayda as Eye-da. If you want the Ada pronunciation then I’d spell it that way.

I met an Ada who must have been about 30. It really suited her.

Ada.

It is old-fashioned but in that sort of way which is popular at the moment.

Yikes, I really dislike it. Really grannyish like Gladys and Ethel.

It’s really growing in popularity. I’m not fond of it but clearly many others are! Ada is the nicer spelling.

Ada and it’s pronounced ade-ah.
