I absolutely love the name Willa. DH likes it to, however mentioned it to my mum and she laughed. sad is it that bad? My DS is Arthur.

hauntedvagina Sun 24-Nov-19 01:44:48

Have you mistyped? Did you mean to write Wilma?

TheNamesBond Sun 24-Nov-19 01:50:56

I love the name Willa.
I presume it’s after Willa Cather, the author?

You could call her Antonia?

dancingunicorns123 Sun 24-Nov-19 01:51:03

@hauntedvagina greatconfused no I meant Willa

dancingunicorns123 Sun 24-Nov-19 01:52:03

@TheNamesBond not after anyone, just saw it on a baby names list and fell in love! Thank you, I do like that although I think I would prefer it to be just Willa?

LonginesPrime Sun 24-Nov-19 02:02:58

There is character called Willa in the Jolene episode of Dolly Parton's Heartstrings on Netflix. - why don't you watch that and see if you still love the name?

DramaAlpaca Sun 24-Nov-19 02:15:47

It will constantly be misheard as Willow, which is a much nicer name.

TheNamesBond Sun 24-Nov-19 02:16:52

Oh I see, I thought you’d read her.
My favourite Willa Cather book is “My Antonia”, about a girl growing up in rural Texas.. hence me suggesting Antonia.

Springb0ks Sun 24-Nov-19 02:17:53

Really like the name!

PenelopeFlintstone Sun 24-Nov-19 02:25:07

I know two Willas. One is six and one is sixteen. I love it.

PenelopeFlintstone Sun 24-Nov-19 02:27:01

It will constantly be misheard as Willow, which is a much nicer name.
I don’t think so at all and she won’t have the pressure to be willowy with Willa, in the way that people and their names don’t always marry up.

Staffori Sun 24-Nov-19 02:42:48

It's really unattractive to me, sorry. But then I never like 'feminised' boys' names i.e. male names with an 'a' stuck on the end. Definitely prefer Willow.

Thetimetravelerswife Sun 24-Nov-19 04:23:26

Sorry also dislike, doesn’t sound very nice to me

chillpill123 Sun 24-Nov-19 04:25:15

Never heard it before! Go for it if you like it 🥰

Astronica Sun 24-Nov-19 04:45:53

I really like it. And like it for Arthur's sister. I guess your mum is just quite unfamiliar with it as, even though it's been around a long time, it has only recently been much taken up, and feels quite smart, grown-up and modern to me - in the same way that names like eg Greta, Tessa, Georgia do.

user1471582494 Sun 24-Nov-19 05:08:26

I've heard it before and I like it. Not sure it goes with Arthur though

Flymetothestars Sun 24-Nov-19 07:51:47

Love the name Willa. One of my absolute favourites. Unusual name but not unfamiliar if that makes any sense

Leopardprintboots Sun 24-Nov-19 07:54:23

Such a gorgeous name. I had never heard of it til recently and then I met a Willa and I just thought it’s the coolest name I’ve ever heard. Suited her so much
I think Willa would sound amazing with any sibling name especially Arthur

Pegase Sun 24-Nov-19 07:55:57

I think she would get hassle at school...

Sewingbea Sun 24-Nov-19 07:58:53

I also thought of Willa Cather and her book "My Antonia". However it also makes me think of L.M. Montgomery's book "Rilla of Ingleside" but sadly as if the R hasn't been pronounced properly. I actually like the name Willa, but I do think you'll spend a lot of time correcting people's pronunciation. Rather like Hester/Esther etc.

MissHenty Sun 24-Nov-19 08:03:36

I’ve recently done a thread about this name. I just ADORE it. Honestly want to have another child just so I can use this name if it’s a girl 🤣🙈 @dancingunicorns123

I love the names simplicity yet uniqueness. I have now met a Willa and she loves her name (not surprised!)

I would give your mum time to adjust and hear the name a couple more times . Willa is a fairly normal name compared to all the Hunters Foxs Wolf and Bluebells about these days. Your mum will just be used to her own generation’s names where 1 in every 5 men were called John or whatever

You could suggest she watch the TV show “succession” that has a Willa in it as she is gorgeous and def not a joke character

MissHenty Sun 24-Nov-19 08:05:11

Ps. The Willa I know doesn’t get any hassle at school about her name- I can’t see why she would to be honest.

daisypond Sun 24-Nov-19 08:05:52

I like Willa and I think of Willa Cather and her fabulous books. I much prefer Willa to Willow.

BillywilliamV Sun 24-Nov-19 08:06:29

Very pretty!

MissHenty Sun 24-Nov-19 09:22:05

Omashu Sun 24-Nov-19 09:41:23

I met a lovely, beautiful, tall girl named Willa last year and I absolutely love it!

Cookit Sun 24-Nov-19 09:45:54

I really like the name Willa. I’ve never met one but have heard of a little girl called Willa.

I don’t see why hassle at school? Is this said to everyone who is thinking of the very normal, uncontentious name William (Will)??

Cookit Sun 24-Nov-19 09:47:03

And for what it’s worth, I’d rather be a Willa than a Willow. Willow sounds like hippy-ish whereas I can imagine a serious, professional Willa.

MissHenty Sun 24-Nov-19 10:00:50

@Cookit agree I’d totally pick Willa over Willow (love both names but Willa has the edge and to be called Willow if youre a girl who isn’t Willow-y must be hard, Willa doesn’t have those connotations or expectations on it)

dancingunicorns123 Sun 24-Nov-19 10:54:08

@Pegase why do you think that?

dancingunicorns123 Sun 24-Nov-19 10:56:43

@Sewingbea I'm not really into books, but not sure how it will be misread. It's pretty simple to say IMO

dancingunicorns123 Sun 24-Nov-19 10:58:28

@MissHenty it's gorgeous isn't it!!
Thank you for the positive story!!

MissHenty Sun 24-Nov-19 11:11:44

@dancingunicorns123 I’m very jealous of you being able to use it!!

MissHenty Sun 24-Nov-19 11:11:56

I don’t have a daughter x

plantainchips Sun 24-Nov-19 11:15:31

Choccyp1g Sun 24-Nov-19 11:17:46

I immediately thought of Willa Cather, and then thought "Cather" is a lovely name, before realising that my name is actually that, with and "ine" on the end!!

So after 50 years I must have grown to like my own name.

BowiesJumper Sun 24-Nov-19 11:26:51

My friend has a 12yr old Willa. I love it!

PlantPotting Sun 24-Nov-19 11:34:24

Love it!! Great name- why isn’t it more popular? I think people haven’t discovered it yet. Let’s keep it a secret!

Littlepond Sun 24-Nov-19 11:41:39

Willa is a gorgeous name! There’s a programme on Netflix called Beyond and it has a character in it called Willa and it struck me then what a lovely name it is 👍

CravingCheese Sun 24-Nov-19 12:07:46

Willa is nice. I personally prefer Wilhelmina but maybe that's me being weird.

I also prefer Willa to Willow btw.

EleanorShellstrop100 Sun 24-Nov-19 12:14:55

Willa is a lovely, underused name. I love it. It has a vintage sort of rustic feel like Tess or Alma. I’ve seen it pop up on name boards a few times recently so I think it might be gaining interest at the moment and for good reason. It’s beautiful! I think it will age better than Willow as it’s an old name.

Cbeebiesrehab Sun 24-Nov-19 12:47:57

Gorgeous name! PLEASE don’t listen to your mother and use it! I think me and @MissHenty should start up a Willa appreciation society😂😂
Side-note: Do your children have unusual names Henty? I feel we have similar tastegrin

insancerre Sun 24-Nov-19 12:59:51

I know a Willa and think it’s a lovely name

insancerre Sun 24-Nov-19 13:03:26

This is the Willa I know
She has her own channel on YouTube and is a model

cocodomingo Sun 24-Nov-19 13:09:34

Love the name, it will age well from child to adult. Its classy and cool. Go for it!

Whatsyourflava Sun 24-Nov-19 13:34:25

Love this name too! It’s top of my list

Discoballs Sun 24-Nov-19 13:54:26

Great name. I liked it for DD, but DH vetoed it.

toughgetsgoing Sun 24-Nov-19 16:58:47

really nice and fresh, quite posh but not in a pompous showy way

midsomermurderess Sun 24-Nov-19 17:02:53

The name is fine. I know someone who's mother laughed at Violet, but Violet her daughter is.

soph7777 Sun 24-Nov-19 17:05:04

No I think it's a silly name. It's trying a bit too hard to be different IMO

Lunafortheloveogod Sun 24-Nov-19 17:11:19

Ahh the good old Willa won’t a...
it does sound like a local junkie shouting Willow in my accent. But I suppose that depends on how far north you come.. Obviously different accents different pronunciations.

Personally I wouldn’t but that’s again local accent issues, there’s a few other name like that though so it’s not an unusual problem.. I just grew up with a name I had to correct a lot so ironically I like simple names, not all traditional but as it sounds.

VenusClapTrap Sun 24-Nov-19 17:26:29

It’s ok. I’ve heard worse.

Eventrider1 Sun 24-Nov-19 18:27:14

I really like it. Suggested it to my DH for our name list but he said no 😩

pumpkinpie01 Sun 24-Nov-19 19:19:53

I know a Willa , I wasn't sure of the name at first and thought it would get mistaken for Willow but it never has and it really suits her.

SemperIdem Sun 24-Nov-19 22:25:21

I like how it looks but I’m not so keen on how it sounds.

Sugarfreejelly Sun 24-Nov-19 22:28:00

Gorgeous name

NoSauce Mon 25-Nov-19 06:50:45

What is it and this ridiculous name?

WineOrGin Mon 25-Nov-19 07:30:32

I absolutely love Willa and think it sounds lovely with Arthur. I really wanted a Willa, but unfortunately it doesn't go with our surname (and we are having a boy)

I think you should just go for it!

dancingunicorns123 Tue 26-Nov-19 01:24:45

@NoSauce how is it ridiculous?

dancingunicorns123 Tue 26-Nov-19 01:24:59

@WineOrGin thank you!!

Leopardprintboots Tue 26-Nov-19 12:37:16

@dancingunicorns123 it’s not ridiculous - it’s amazing

NoSauce Tue 26-Nov-19 12:56:57

It’s ridiculous imo. Obviously others think differently. It seems like a made up name to me. I know it’s not though. I just don’t like it, sorry.

PetraRabbit Tue 26-Nov-19 13:11:00

In honesty, I don't like it - it sounds awkward to me when spoken. But it's getting popular with the hipster type so won't be too odd or unusual for her if you do go for it. I know a baby Willa.

Maywedding Tue 26-Nov-19 13:40:35

I really dislike it. There is nothing pretty sounding about it and it is awkward sounding to me.
It's a very weak sounding name that should continue to Willow or something more robust.
It makes me think of grin so maybe that's a plus.

elderlee Tue 26-Nov-19 14:04:11

I haven't heard it before but think it's lovely, if you love it then go for it!

NoSauce Tue 26-Nov-19 14:06:01

Yes it’s weak sounding to me too and like it’s unfinished somehow.

Leopardprintboots Tue 26-Nov-19 14:10:42

Will you let us know if you go for it @dancingunicorns123

I think you should
I’ll have serious name envy though

NoSauce Tue 26-Nov-19 14:13:00

Why do you want to know? Seems over invested.

Ilovewillow Tue 26-Nov-19 14:14:08

I think it's lovely! We considered it but went with Willow instead. FWIW I don't think it will be confused with Willow.

Helenlegs Tue 26-Nov-19 14:26:48

I’m not a fan. I’m imagining having to sort out the upset at getting called Willy esp when children are going through that stage around 5 when they seem to find anything to do with human reproductive parts and poo/ wee etc hysterical.

To me it has an unfinished sound to it too and people will also address her as Willow by mistake i think.

Leopardprintboots Tue 26-Nov-19 14:43:08

William is the most traditional acceptable name you can get and that actually has the word Willy in it- Willa does not

@NoSauce oh dear am I a bit too keen 🙈🙈 I just love hearing updates of what people decide. Especially when lots of us have taken the time to reply. It’s quite a polite thing to come back and update but obviously no obligation. Apologies if I’m too invested OP xxx 😊

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth Wed 27-Nov-19 00:46:48

I think it’s absolutely hideous. Truly awful. I’ve never quite been able to get it’s popular on MN.

AntiStuff Wed 27-Nov-19 11:15:49

How about Wilda instead? I know a couple of small Wildas and think it's so lovely.

Shmithecat2 Wed 27-Nov-19 11:20:00

Love it. I know a little girl called Willa, cute as a button.

Mamabear88 Wed 27-Nov-19 12:37:17

Never heard of it before, not keen tbh sorry....

geojojo Wed 27-Nov-19 12:59:18

I know a little Willa. I don't love it but it's unique and sounds strong. The Willa I know sometimes gets called Willow accidentally.

Berryjam Wed 27-Nov-19 17:35:23

It's not a strong name. It's whispy and a blah sound.

ilovechocolatebiscuits Sat 30-Nov-19 10:44:30

Not sure where all these people are getting 'wet' and not pretty from.

I think it's such a strong pretty name I love it

MissHenty Sat 30-Nov-19 10:46:21

@ilovechocolatebiscuits completely agree. It’s just perfect!

NoSauce Sat 30-Nov-19 10:52:15

It’s subjective. A lot of posters think it’s weak but then those who love it think it’s wonderful. Such is life.

confusedyoungthing Sat 30-Nov-19 19:04:35

Willa is very pretty! Go for it smile

helpiamstressedbuthey Sat 30-Nov-19 21:23:25

I adore this name and would love it for dd my DH says no! Go for Willa I say, it is such a lovely and different name

Bluerussian Sat 30-Nov-19 21:37:21

How about 'Willard'.

Cinammoncake Sat 30-Nov-19 23:09:36

If you've got a London accent it could sound like Willow. But also there'll be lots of calling her Willy at school and sniggering, that's just what kids are like. So it's a no from me, sorry.

TabbyMumz Sat 30-Nov-19 23:13:26

Awful name.

tabbiemoo Sat 30-Nov-19 23:15:34

Much prefer Willow personally. I always think of Wilma when I hear Willa. I don't like either.

ilovechocolatebiscuits Mon 02-Dec-19 01:24:31

@Cinammoncake I don't think that's the case. My husband is Will and he's never been called willy in his life

Cinammoncake Mon 02-Dec-19 19:58:45

But Willa sounds more like Willy than Will does imo

SchadenfreudePersonified Mon 02-Dec-19 21:18:55

My NDN is called Willa.

Short for Wilhelmina.

She's very nice, but I don't like either name.

Leopardprintboots Mon 02-Dec-19 21:35:26

William literally has “willy” as part of the name!

Willa does not.

I adore the name Willa. 🤩

Sh05 Thu 05-Dec-19 09:25:15

I've never heard of it and agree It might become a teasing point at school.

Leopardprintboots Thu 05-Dec-19 09:35:02

Hasn’t become a teasing point for the Willa I know

One of the main female characters in new Tv show Succession is called Willa (she’s stunning and makes me love the name even more)

Cbeebiesrehab Thu 05-Dec-19 09:50:14

90% of names have teasing potential. If kids are going to be mean they are going to be mean-whatever you call them.

Leopardprintboots Thu 05-Dec-19 16:13:41

Agree @Cbeebiesrehab you really can’t predict the names that are going to get picked on. A friend of mine was called wendy and constantly got called Wendy house and called fat and “size of a house”. Another friend with surname Pratt was left alone! You’d just never predict.

Cbeebiesrehab Thu 05-Dec-19 21:06:29

Exactly @Leopardprintboots you can’t let rubbish kids jokes put you off a perfectly lovely name.

s3tut0y3r Fri 06-Dec-19 22:49:09

It is a lovely name and goes well with Arthur

wonderwooman Fri 06-Dec-19 22:56:49

I love the name Willa - much nicer than Willow 💕
