Baby names

Aurora?

I'm newly pregnant, so we don't know if we are having a boy or a girl.
We have one ds, Hector. We have quite a few ideas for boys' names, but can't agree on girls'.
The one name we both like is Aurora, nn Rory.
What do you think?
Is it chavvy or lovely? Is it too popular - the new Ella?
All opinions welcome.

Aurora is beautiful. Rory is a cute nickname

It's lovely but very common where I live. Theres at least three in DS's nursery. My worry with a name like Aurora is that it will date badly.
I do think it's beautiful though.

Thanks for your replies. I've always loved the name, but I don't like the Disney connection and I am also concerned it will date. We will maybe have to have a re-think

How about Celeste.

No. It’s too Sleeping Beauty for me, both Disney Princess and ballet character. I never think Roman goddess of dawn.

I met three baby auroras in one baby group the other day. Each parent said they had never heard another with the name... it was awkward because they were all very off with each other.
I feel like it’s quiet a popular name now.

Much prefer Aurelia you could call her Rae for short

It's like 'roar roar roar' so really unnatractive sounding.

I like Aurora but not Rory.

I like Aurora. I don’t feel the Disney connotation immediately. Instead I think of Aurora the northern lights. Gives me a beautiful mystical vibe.

I only know one Aurora in her 30s now, with the nickname Rory. I loved her name. I dislike Rory though and prefer Rora.

Don’t be caught up in this names that date malarchy...every single name dates.

Jane, Rebecca and sarah are classic “timeless” names. Jane and Rebecca are definitely dated and sarah is on the way to becoming dated.

I think Aurora is very pretty, ignore the Disney connotation. There’s a Disney princess called Sofia and jasmine...and there’s been recent threads about those names and no one has mentioned Disney!

I don't dislike it, but in some accents it doesn't sound great. Also, if she has difficulty with her r's, it'll be awful.

How about Cora @Liverbird77

I love that name

Or
Roxanne /Roxanna nickname Rox/Roxy

I can’t say Aurora - I say Or-wor-wa. (I cant say my r’s.) would be a nightmare name for me!

I don’t associate it with Disney at all. I connect it with the Roman goddess, the Northern Lights and the Sleeping Beauty ballet.

I think classic names can survive popular culture associations.

Rory is a boys' name & it sounds ridiculous on a girl. It's a male name meaning 'red king'. Using it for a girl is yet another example of traditional male names being appropriated for girls. Funny how it doesn't happen the other way round.

Anyway, Aurora is a lovely name, but not with Rory as a diminutive.

I think Rory is a great nickname for a girl.
Ha. I know a little baby girl Noah.
No boys names are safe and I love it. Can’t wait for the day boys start using strong girls names like Emma. Maybe not in my lifetime but it’s coming

DramaAlpaca · 23/11/2019 14:35

Isn't the female version of Noah, Noa? Funnily enough I like Noa, but I detest Noah.

Emma for a boy has made me Grin
