Greta

Totally hypothetical, as I'm not even pregnant (although hoping to start TTC next year) but do you think 'Greta' will shoot up in popularity due to Greta Thunberg?

Would you avoid a name associated with a big public figure (albeit one I agree with on most counts)?

As I say, totally moot point at the moment - I just enjoy thinking about future names!

It’s hard to predict in terms of name popularity and famous people. Ill have to check the statistics again but I think after Prince George the name George got more popular yet after Prince Charlotte and Louis, those names got less popular (I might have the names muddled but the point being you can’t predict as sometimes it makes a name more popular sometimes it makes it less so)

I love the name Greta!

It was coming back before Greta Thunberg hit the news. It reminds me of Greta Garbo as well.

I'm not so keen on the English pronunciation, Grett-ah. I prefer the German/Scandinavia Greh-ta.

I like it but would be put off by the association.

I love it and wouldn't be put off by the association (or even immediately associate it).

DD is Greta - born late 2017 so a bit before Greta Thunberg became widely known. I imagine it might see a bit of an upsurge in use but I also think it’s a bit of a marmite name (plenty of people find it harsh sounding) so I don’t think it’ll ever get super popular. And even if it does I think GT is a great namesake!

We still love the name btw (luckily it’s one of the few from our shortlist that I haven’t since gone off!) and have had lots of compliments.

I do think it will have a brief spurt in popularity but I don't think it will be a connection that sticks strongly with the name as children grow up. In ten or twenty years, no one will be saying to them 'Oh, after Greta Thunberg?' I really think most people will be more like, 'Greta Thunberg - was she an actress? Oh, yeah, the climate change girl. Huh. Wonder what she's up to now.'

I also find the English pronunciation of Grett-a very harsh.

It sounds so much nicer in German or Swedish, where the name originates from.

Hate it

I agree with PP that the English pronunciation (Gret-uh) doesn’t sound particularly nice. It’s not a pretty name - not that girls names have to be ‘pretty’ but you know what I mean. I don’t get the appeal.

I have two colleagues whose daughters are both called Greta (pre GT as it happens). So I think it's already quite popular which mystifies me as I think it's quite ugly.

I also find the English pronunciation of Greta very harsh. I think it's the hard 't' sound.
