My mother passed away when I was 19 and I would like to honour her via my baby’s name....but she was called Margaret and I really don’t like that name. My husband doesn’t like daisy and a friend has Margot. I’ve read that Peggy is a nickname for Margaret....will everybody just think of Peggy Mitchell?!? Any other ideas for Margaret alternatives? My mother herself hated her name being shortened to Maggie and was called Marg or Margie by friends and relatives

No don’t call your baby Peggy! Yes Peggy Mitchell is what I think way too granny and not in the fashionable way.... Sorry to hear about your mum, use Margaret or Margot or even Daisy as her middle name then you are still honouring her but your daughter gets her own name.

I’m not keen on Peggy, sorry OP. How about Margaret for a middle name?

I adored the name. I was so close to using it . After my beloved nanny mainly but also after Peggy Olsen. A well known Instagrammer names her daughter Peggy while I was pregnant and it seemed really cute on her baby but my mum talked me out of it and in the end I feel that was right. It’s not a very nice name for a teenager

Mairead or Megan?

I know a baby Peggy! She’s very cute!
But as pp have said you could use Margaret as a middle name and give your child a name that’s chosen because you like the name!!

I actually like Peggy! My much missed mum was Margaret and was always known as that but I called her Mags, Maggie and then Senorita Margarita. Sorry, I know that doesn't help you, just having a moment. What about Margaret as her middle name?

Sorry OP, I've earmarked Peggy as the name for my next dog since it was vetoed this time.
What about Maggie? I love that for a little girl.

Peggy is a gorgeous name and on trend with the style of name currently popular. There are a couple in my kids' schools.

Thanks for all your thoughts. We actually really like Peggy, but totally agree that it might not be so nice on a teenager. I think Margaret as a middle name may be best then! I love The suggestion of Greta but my husband doesn’t want anything Germanic as he’s got a Jewish surname

I prefer Peggy to Margaret. If you love Peggy then go for it. I think it's a lovely, quirky name.

I love the name Peggy - I know two tiny Peggy's in the posher playgroups of East London, and my DS had a teenage trainee swimming teacher called Peggy. It is around as a name, but less common than Margot, which is everywhere.

I would definitely put Margaret on the birth cert though.

My daughter is called Peggy so (obviously) I love it. People often comment on how much they like it too.

I really like Peggy! Also Maggie or Meg?

I love the name Peggy it makes me think of Peggy Carter more than Peggy Mitchell. Margaret means Pearl so you could use that. Other than that there's also Marjorie or May. Maisie and Mariota are Scottish versions.

Marguerite is the beautiful French version, so pretty.

I like the idea of Pearl as that’s the meaning of Margaret.

@Tawdrylocalbrouhaha we live in East London too and there are so many Margots...haven’t heard any Peggys yet just lots and lots of Iris, Margot, Nancy and weirdly Astrid

I love the Scottish variations @mumunderthemoon!

A friend called their baby Patsi which I initially hated and now love and I feel Peggy may be the same kind of name....I feel the responses on here have shown that it’s a bit of a divisive name 😂

In Little Women it's shortened to Meg.

Who is Peggy Mitchell?
Call her Meg.
