How important are initials?

Sexnotgender · 03/01/2019 19:06

We have 99% decided on a name.

The initials will be GIT, is that an issue?

Considering throwing in a second middle name that I love to change it to GFIT.

Or does it not matter?

You may only notice when they get post (don't ask why I know this!)

How could you not think that mattered?

I generally say it doesn’t matter but GIT is pretty rubbish. I wouldn’t do it.

My friend got a tattoo of her granny’s initials after her granny died... and it was E.G.G, awful! Initials definitely matter!

How could you not think that mattered?

That’s why I’m asking...

It bothers me a little but I wasn’t sure if I was bothering over nothing.

It absolutely matters!

One of the name combinations I liked would have been G.O.D...

My brother was nearly F.A.G.....

I have an Ella and we were close calling her brother Sam....

Sam and Ella.......

I wouldn't do it - we've even ruled out names which would make it CAR purely as we don't want it to spell a word!

Don’t do it!

If it was an inoffensive word then fine but don’t call your child a Git!

I hate my initials, I used to get lots of comments on them and they’re used daily at work, I had one horrible manager who would laugh every time she had to write or say them Angry I’m I’m my 30s and still haven’t forgiven my parents

I use my initials every day at work as that is how we assign/sign our names. One of my colleagues is WBJ. It raises the odd eyebrow.

Thank you! You’ve confirmed my concerns are founded. I wasn’t sure if I was being overly precious Blush

I was going to say why is the name something like Thomas William Archibald Taylor, but actually it's nearly as bad Grin

Honestly OP don't do it, your child will be ribbed mercilessly at school and will forever be called 'git'.

My sister was going to call her daughter a name that would have had the initials V.D. It had never occurred to her about initials but oh my, the poor daughter would have had one horrible school life.

Surely bullies will bully over something so if not initials then something else

I'd add the second middle name in. Sometimes initials do get used so it is worth thinking about

A male friend of mine had the initials BJDJ. It certainly atttacted some comments at school.

I know an ADHD. His parents are both primary teachers (and distant relatives). I've always thought they must have done it on purpose.
Yes, it matters.

Yes we are often referred to by initials at work so I would not do it.

You could always change your 2 middle names round and make GIFT. Or would that be a bit weird?
