Lux is a soap.
Aurora - disney princess
Topaz - hippy

Don't name a daughter Autumn/September unless born in them

Leonara best of the bunch.

Iseult - not sure how to say it
Magdalena - ok, sounds a bit east european
Svetlana - ok, sounds a bit east european

Magdalena is the only name on your list which I like. Some of them are frankly batshit (September, Fuchsia - which you've spelt incorrectly btw, Lux, Svetlana, Topaz).

Like Daisy from your husband's list. Posy is nice, but only as a shortening for Josephine.

Like Leonora from your mutual list.

mikeuniform haha yes cant use Fuchsia if I cant even spell it at this early stage!!
And how did you know I cant say 'r'!!! That was my objection to that name as its my husbands favourite but I often say 'w' instead of 'r' especially when cross or stressed...

people are liking Ariadne and Leonora the best so far I see!

never heard of Lux soap!

I admit September is a bit out there.... but Svetlana, Fuchsia and Topaz are in reasonably common usage arent they?

Ive always loved the name September because it was the name of a princess in a story I loved as a child.... but yes, my family and husband would agree with you that its too much

From your mutual list (you may as well discount anything that only one of you likes) I like Isolde and Leonora. Isolde would be my top choice. Nico is a lovely name for a sexy Italian man but is just down right bizarre for a baby girl.

I like Leonora best.

Ariadne sounds a bit harsh to me, how about Ariane or Ariana instead?

TatianaLarina · 13/06/2018 23:25

Iseult and Aurora wIn hands down.

I quite like Fuchsia (pron Fewsha) but the flower was named after a botanist called Fuchs, which I think is pronounced something like Fooks. Dahlia is a possible alternative and probably not at all 'out there' but could be Dahl-ya or Dale-ya.

letsallhaveanap · 13/06/2018 23:33

Dahlia sounds lovely but sadly reminds me of the beheaded hollywood prostitute so dont think I could name my daughter that!

My husband chose Nico after the female singer and I thought it was pretty too.

I do very much like Isolde and so does husband... but I worry how it would be shortened and it also sort of rhymes with my sons name....

Re the separate lists... they arent things we actively dislike, they are names we would consider but do not prefer... we didnt include anything either of us actually disliked and vetoed

Oh dear. Don't use it.
I'd go with Nico.

The only name from those lists that I don't dislike incredibly is Sylvia. And, even that is a bit dated. Along the lines of Sapphire, what about Safia/Safiyah/Sofia? All very pretty names. Also, what about Elena (el-ay-na) instead of Magdalena? Elena would be gorgeous.

Stringofpearls · 14/06/2018 08:05

I like Sylvia and Ariadne, Ariadne was in our top 3 for our little girl. The only Nico I've ever known was a boy so that could be confusing for some, but I guess that's only the same as with names like Alex or Jessie.

Report
LeeMiller · 14/06/2018 08:06

Nico's real name was Christa, she was given the stage name Nico by a photographer (after a man he had a crush on) precisely because it was androgynous. She also had a rather messy life - heroin addiction, anti-semitism/racism, a tragic death - I love her music but it's not an association I'd choose for a child. I agree most people would assume she's a boy (my husband has a foreign name that is mistaken for a similar girl's name in the UK - don't underestimate how annoying this gets!).

I do think Nico would make a nice nickname - like Coco.

I like Leonora and Magdalena - elegant and grown-up, with a lot of nn potential.

Svetlana sounds like a Russian call girl..Aurora is nice and Nico nice too

Report
RedDwarves · 14/06/2018 08:22

Nico was a known racist and anti-Semite, so I wouldn't be too quick to name a child after her.

Svetlana is only in "common" usage in Slavic countries and, even then, it's considered outdated now.

I've never come across a person called Fuchsia or Topaz.

Ariadne is lovely !
I also love Daisy, Posy is a very cute nick name for Josephine.

Autumn - OK-ish.
September - probably not
Fuschia - maybe, if you spell it Fuchsia
Lux - it's a soap.
Iolanthe - bit flouncy and it makes me think of Gilbert and Sullivan
Sylvia - yes.
Iseult - yes. OK.
Magdalena - v East European. Prefer Madeleine.
Svetlana - I'd assume you were Russian/have Russian links
Ariadne - possibly - but she didn't have a happy time of it in the end.
Topaz -don't mind this. There's a rather hippy one in Dodie Smith's I Capture The Castle.
Astrid - not keen

Husband likes:
Daisy - too cutesy. A flower that's regarded as a weed.
Sapphire - not keen. I prefer Topaz.
Posy - yes, I quite like.
Aurora - Disney princess
Ingrid - no, it's like Astrid. Like you're playing dress-up.

Isolde - OK - same name as Iseult really.
Nico - no. Nicole?
Leonora - yep, but perhaps a little flouncy
