Hubbie and I are so stuck on boys names. He's from a (VERY) big family, so we're trying to avoid immediate family names.

This means no to:

Robert
Keith
James
Christopher
David
Jonathan
William
Zachary

Hubbie also hates nickname names serious eye roll He has no problem with nicknames but he's deadset against names that originated as nicknames being on the actual birth certificate (I'm starting to wonder if he's 64 not 34...)

So that's no to:

Harry
Alfie
Fred
Bobby etc.

I'm really fond of Edward. He's not. But I'm staying firm and would like it in their somewhere... We do want a middle name - I quite like the idea of two. Hubbie has two, as does my little brother and I think it sounds nice.

I'm 28 weeks... and we've been trying to seriously think of a name since our 20 week scan. I swear girls names are easier!

Help me Mumsnet, you're my only hope!

I love Edward and Samuel; both were on our list. We also had:

Joseph
Matthew
Patrick
Gregory

I love Christopher.

I don't like Thomas but Tom is gorgeous.
It'll never date. It's both gentle and strong

I agree with your husband on nicknames. Alfred or Henry on birth certificate, Alfie or Harry day to day.

I love the list you mention. Classic names that have lots of nickname options.

Like you, I love Edward (Ed, Eddie, Ted, Ned)
William
Joseph
Samuel
Matthew
Thomas
Michael
Jonathan
Gabriel

I do actually agree with your dh about nicknames. I don't even like Harry as a full name. I love Edward and would have called my dd it if she had been a boy. Henry? Oliver? Seems like you like quite traditional names.

George?

Awwlookatmybabyspider Tue 12-Jun-18 17:00:02

Oh sorry just seen Christopher is on the no list.
Other ideas.
Anthony. Vincent. Alexander.

Samuel is my favourite of your suggestions.
Have you considered:
Nathaniel
Dominic
Sebastian
Benjamin
Edgar

Carl. Classic, strong name that can't be shortened.

Disclosure: biased because it's DH's name

Samuel and Thomas are lovely

Elliott?

MikeUniformMike Tue 12-Jun-18 19:12:15

All the names you suggest will get shortened - Hen/Hal/Harry/Tom/Sam/Ed/Ted etc

I like all of them and would probably go for Edward. You can insist on the full version.

RedDwarves Tue 12-Jun-18 23:08:58

I love all of those names.

But I love them in this order:

3. Edward
4. Henry

Bubblesoup Wed 13-Jun-18 07:40:47

Sean? Its my new fave boy name!

Bibijayne Wed 13-Jun-18 09:54:44

@xdestarx We both know an awful guy called Edmund who used to semi-talk me. Kinda burned that name smile

Cariadxx Wed 13-Jun-18 11:09:32

Samuel. Lovely name underused. Definitely not Carl.

thegreylady Wed 13-Jun-18 13:19:14

My dgs is Edward and is amazing in every way! He might well be the kindest , cleverest, most loving, nine year old Edward in the whole world.
-not at all biased of course-

thegreylady Wed 13-Jun-18 13:19:57

Hmm I can’t make strike through work (sulks)

MeyYael Wed 13-Jun-18 13:46:03

I like Henry, David, Jonathan, William and Zachary.

James is also nice.

I personally dislike Christopher, tbh...
