Call him Teddy or call him Theodore and use Teddy as a nickname

Me and DP can't decide but we're swaying toward just Teddy as that's what he'd always be called. We're not overly in love with Theodore either. He could always use Ted when he was older if he didn't like Teddy

Theodore and call him Teddy. They're both lovely names but he may prefer something more professional and less 'cute' when he's older

Theodore is cooler than Ted

Definitely Theodore. Teddy is OK for a toddler I suppose but he might want the option of a grown up name when he's older.

Edward also shortens to Teddy if you prefer that to Theodore.

Teddy is definitely too cutesy for an adult. What about Edward?Smile

I love the name Teddy, for a child. But not so cute for the adult... I'd definitely consider a stronger name that they can then shorten if they want to... Theodore and Edward are both nice names x

Theodore is a totally awesome name. I 'd go for that with teddy as nn.

We have a Teddy but he is officially Edward. Other options could be Edmund, Theo

Theodore

Theodore; he may not thank you to be officially Teddy in later life. Theodore has much more gravitas - he could be Theo.

Edward? Please don't put Teddy on the birth certificate. He's going to be a man one day and shouldn't be named after a toy bear.

Have Teddy as a nickname and give him Theodore/Edward as a full name. I have a short form of a name as my full name and it's a right pain as everyone assumes it's really the long version and try to use that. As a result my two have "proper" names on their birth certs but go by the short form.

Teddy with Theodore/Edward on the bc.

Definitely Theodore, he may prefer the shortening of Theo later, which is a pretty cool option.

Theodore (although Edward is much nicer). It's his name, let him decide what he'll always be called. Teddy is cute, but a grown man isn't necessarily going to love the cuteness.

I always think it is better to use the full name on the bc rather than the nickname. It just allows the person more versatility with their name. Theodore is a lovely name, Teddy is good, but if the child wants to go by Theo later he couldn't if you'd just put Teddy on the bc.

I think it would be nice to have the option of a full name. I like Theodore, Edwin and Edward.

Theodore with Teddy as his everyday name...gives him the choice as an adult.

HotChocChick · 25/05/2018 00:12

I'd go Edward

Edward is nicer than Theodore. When he’s older he’d just be Theo rather than Ted/Teddy if you went with Theodore. I like Edward shortened to Ted/Teddy when they’re young but Teddy as a stand alone name isn’t great.

He could always use Ted when he was older if he didn't like Teddy.

It will still be his name on his drivers license, passport, job applications, marriage certificate,,, think about the reactions other people/strangers will have towards him only knowing his first name is Teddy.
It's cute for a newborn and a sweet NN for a young boy, but no grown man is going to be thanking you for a name like that anytime in the future.

I like Theodore.

Agree that Teddy as an official name is too cutesy.

Could you do Ted on the BC and have a longer nn of Teddy?

I’m very firm on this. When people name their kids (formally) with a nickname, it always smacks of insecurity on their part. Like they don’t believe the kid will have friends to give them a nickname that comes naturally later in life. I don’t think many people in my neighbourhood agree with me though, given how many Harrys, Maxs and Bellas are running about!

I’d go for Theodore.

The teddy bear association makes Teddy feel like a very babyish name to me.

I would definitely use Theodore. Or Edward with Teddy as a NN. I named my son Toby as I didn't like Tobias. Now he's getting older I wish I'd listened and used Tobias on his bc. Mainly because at his age Toby is sweet but in 15 years hell be a grown man and I should of given him a full name. (Yes ill get slated for it but I wanted Toby not Tobias and I was so poorly after his birth I didn't stick up for myself.)

Our son is just Teddy for the exact reasons you’ve said - that’s what we have always intended for him to be called so seemed pointless having a different name on birth certificate. We actually now tend to shorten it to Ted much more often, which I think is a lovely strong name for a man so clearly my vote is for Teddy!
