I know it’s probably a regional thing just curious how people think this should be pronounced
Ro-an or Roww-Ann

Row (as in your boat)- An

I think it depends where you're from. I would pronounce it as row as in an altercation, rather than row as in rowing a boat. Hope that makes sense!

I would think row - an pronunciation was the girls name rowanne.

NannyR Thu 24-May-18 10:07:07

Row (your boat) - an. But more of a soft -un sound than an -ann sound if that makes sense?

It's DS's name any any situations like midwives doctors etc where they've seen his name before I've said it they've pronounced it like that too.

I'd pronounce it Row (boat) an for a boy and Row (argument) an for a girl, not sure why - probably just the ones I know.

I want to pronounce it like Row a boat but live in Scotland and people tend to say it like having a Row / argument
I can just pronounce it the way we want though can’t we ? It’s for a girl

FizzyGreenWater Thu 24-May-18 11:15:34

Yep I know one in Scotland and he is Row as in argument.

You can pronounce it any way you want but I reckon in Scotland you'll mostly get the above!

ChaseRubbleRocky Thu 24-May-18 11:43:15

How does the Scottish accent pronounce Rowanne? Might be a way to get it pronounced the way you want.

Down south its pronounced like rowan Atkinson whenever I've heard it, but if you're likely to be living in Scotland long term I'd think about whether it constantly being pronounced differently to how you want would grate on you.

FoofFighter Thu 24-May-18 11:56:48

To me it's Row your boat un.

Where I live in Scotland though it's have a row ann

The first is a nicer pronunciation I think though.

PandaCat Thu 24-May-18 12:02:12

Row-un as in row your boat.

BigGlasses Thu 24-May-18 12:16:08

I live in Scotland and the ones I know pronouce it Row (argument) an which is how I would instinctively pronouce it, however all the ones I know (ages 3, 6, 45 and 50) are female. I don't personally know any male Rowans but Rowan Williams and Rowan Atkinson seem to pronouce it Row(boat) an. I don't know if that is because they are both English, or whether that is because they are male.
