Iris or Sylvie?

This will be the last name thread (promise!) but the opinions have been so helpful so far so just wanted a couple more....Which is everyone’s favourite?

We have a one syllable surname and middle name undecided.

Thanks x

Both are lovely, but Sylvie is less popular so gets my vote.

chezmk1988 · 23/04/2018 18:48

Both nice but I vote Iris

Pompom42 · 23/04/2018 18:58

.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 23/04/2018 19:02

Sylvie, i'm not a fan of Iris.

TheWizardofWas · 23/04/2018 19:03

Sylvie is so pretty. Iris is too harsh and overused. Do go fir Sylvie it has such a glittery lightness about it.

daisypond · 23/04/2018 19:14

Iris. Sylvie is nice, but it's very elfin-like, to my ears, so too much of the fairy about it. Isn't it quite a "middle-aged" name in France?

AnyaMoondial · 23/04/2018 19:59

I love Iris.

pipilangstrumpf · 23/04/2018 20:29

Iris can be pronounced Ee-ris or Eye-ris so that may be confusing.

Sylvie is beautiful and easy to pronounce

HeyDolly · 23/04/2018 20:42

Sylvie gets my vote

BringMeCoffeePlease · 23/04/2018 20:57

Sylvie.

I know Iris is so popular on here at the minute so it’ll definitely get lots of votes. But Sylvie just seems so elegant and classic.

frootlooop · 23/04/2018 20:59

I know a Sylvie. Gorgeous name but both are lovely

CheeseTheDay · 24/04/2018 10:06

DD1 (12) is Iris, but it wasn't as popular when we used it, as it is now.

Iris is obviously my favourite of the two, but if popularity bothers you, go with Sylvie (which is lovely).

stellinaa · 24/04/2018 12:15

Definitely Sylvie

NorfolkNellie · 24/04/2018 20:27

Both lovely but Sylvie.

DanceDisaster · 24/04/2018 21:39

Sylvie

witherwings · 24/04/2018 21:42

Both really lovely. Can you go with both; iris sylvie. They go quite well together I think

Raines100 · 24/04/2018 23:21

Sylvie is stunning. Iris is not.

PlatypusPie · 24/04/2018 23:26

Sylvie - beautiful and elegant, as typified by the extraordinary French ballet dancer Sylvie Guillem.

Mrsknackered · 25/04/2018 11:40

I love both. They’re my favourite girls names! So tough. I think Iris though?

temporaryname99 · 25/04/2018 11:45

Yeah, no sorry, you can't use Sylvie. I own that name and nobody else is allowed it! ;)

Clawdy · 25/04/2018 20:03

Sylvie is beautiful.

mathanxiety · 25/04/2018 20:19

Sylvie by a long shot here. I agree with a PP, Iris is harsh-sounding.

Iris is an old, quite international name and I like it. But if you want a unique name in an English speaking country, you'll have to go for Sylvie.

In my country - I'm not from the U.K. or an English speaking country - Sylvie is a very common (French) name. Mostly among women above 35. It's actually an old name here that came back in fashion after a generation or 2. My grandmother had a friend (who was even quite a lot older than she was) whose name was Sylvie. And my parents also had a French friend names Sylvie who is now in her 70s.

And I know quite a lot of Sylvie's, it's also the name of one of my best friends. :-) They're all between 35 and 45 years old and it's either written like Sylvie or Silvie. So here it would be a bit weird - or also unique ;-) - to name a baby like that. But I wouldn't doubt if I were you cause it is indeed a quite unique name in English. And I also think it's a pretty name. :-)

Sylvie who owns Shakespeare & Co in Paris. Pretty.

Iris is my DD's middle name. Rainbow, flower, iridescent. Love it!

Leontine · 28/04/2018 05:05

Love Iris but Sylvie is pretty too!
