Bethan

I already have a little boy with a Welsh name. We are hoping to try for another baby soon so naturally thinking about names, and would like another Welsh one.

What are the general thoughts of Bethan? Is it dated? How many do you know under 10?

Thanks Smile

It’s lovely. I don’t think it’s dated. I also like Betsan. I don’t know any under 10.

Love it. One of the loveliest girls I ever taught was a Bethan.

Most Bethans I know are in their 20s or 30s, but then so are most people I know. I do know a guy whose little daughter (maybe 2 or 3 years old) is called Bethan.

It’s a sweet name.

Love it. I knew one at school and was always jealous of her lovely name.

I like Bethan and (even more) Betsan - they are pretty and likeable names.

I think of it as a name a posh or aspirational parent might not choose but, again, that is no bad thing (Agamemnon or Persephone? No thanks. Mine's a Betsan.)

My DD1 (8yrs) is Bethan so I'm totally biased but I love it.

One of my best friends is a Bethan - in her 30's. It's a lovely name for your daughter

I love it. I know two - one in her 20s and one in her late 30s, both absolutely lovely.

I don't know any under 10 but think it's a lovely name. You could also consider Betsy, as a name or as a nickname for Bethan?

I don’t like it. It sounds a bit worthy to me.

My daughters name so of course I love it. Feminine with out being girly, not too long, easy to spell. Slightly unusual (esp if you don't live in Wales) without being odd.

I got the idea because one of my brothers oldest friends is bethan, so def don't see it as an old lady name.

Dunno if it's cos I don't live in Wales, but one thing to be aware of is a quite lot of people assume by daughters name is Bethany Angry

It's popular. It was hugely popular with welsh-speakers in the 1960s and 70s. Bethan pronounced with the 'a' as in 'can'. 'man' etc is nice but Bethan pronounced Bethun isn't.

It’s lovely

I know a few who are about 12 or 13 (I live in Wales). I prefer Bethan to Betsan personally

I am Welsh but living in England and have a Bethan. Gorgeous, name and unusual round here but she does have to remind people sometimes that she's not called Bethany. Also where as I tend to stress the first syllable often English pronunciation tends to stress second syllable.

It’s a nice name but, as someone mentioned above, it just looks like an unfinished Bethany to me. If you live in Wales it may be more OK, if you’re in England you may get people thinking it’s Bethany.

I have a Bethan and live in North England so do get people mistakenly calling her Bethany or tending to pronounce Bethun. She's 13 now and the only one we know. She tends to be called Beth now. When she was little holidays back home in Wales we're always exciting for her because she could get personalised key rings and fridge magnets with her name on....
