Years and years ago we were on holiday a d there was a family with a toddler son called Jed. He was the cutest little kid and somewhere in the back of my mind I've always hankered after my own little Jed.
Do you think Jed is a name in its own right or is it short for something? And if So, what?
Dh thinks Jed is a ridiculous name so it's probably a no but I'm not quite giving up on it yet.

There are hundreds of boys names Jed without being short for anything, so it's not a question of whether it's a name or not - it is.

It started as a short form of Jedidah, and I have known it used by a couple of Geralds and a Gerard.

I don't think it's ridiculous because it's my brother's name. Saying that, I'm not a huge fan of it, but it's definitely a name!

This is my sons name! Short for jediah. It wasn't a particularly cute baby name but he's 9 now and his friends think it's a cool name. It's not for everyone. But it's different. Can't say I've ever met anyone else with the same name.

It’s a cute nickname but I’m not sure it works as a stand alone name.

Not sure what it might be short for - all I can think is Jedward!

Josiah shortened to Jed -as in President Bartlet (west wing) was a name we considered for DS but it clashed with our surname

I've known a few Geds, always short for Gerard.

I prefer Jade - though jaded Grin for a girl, it's brilliant for a boy.

I love Jed. Campaigning for it if DC2 is a boy. I'd have Jediah on the birth certificate.

I know two Jeds.

One is my age (51) and his name was short for Edmund (!)

One is a friend of DS's (18), and his name is just Jed. It really suits him; it's a nice name.

I also really like Jared.

The only Jed I've known was a complete creep and weirdo.

So, it's a no from me.

I know one Geddy in his 20s. No idea what it's short for, if anything.

Jed feels like it could stand on its own. I quite like it.

Jed isn't usually a nn for Josiah. Jed Bartlet's nickname in the West Wing is a conflation of his two given names, Josiah Edward.
