What are your thoughts on Adelaide for a girl. I have no personal associations with the place I just like the name, it has an old-fashioned feel to it for me

It was my great grandmother’s name. I really like it.

It's not for me.
I'm not a fan of people being named after places.... don't like Paris, India etc as people's names.

Gorgeous! Just a word of warning though, it's a fairly top choice at the bookies for Will and Kate's baby #3. In case that bothers you...

Guys and Dolls sprang to mind, but I love that so yes, nice. Smile

BackforGood - Adelaide the place was named after Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV.

It’s my favourite name in the world!
Dh, however, would not budge.

Makes me think of the Heidi books. I adored them growing up.

Love it

I don’t like it. I’m not crazy for place names as names. It’s not the worst though. Wasn’t there an Aunt Adelaide in nanny McPhee? Makes me think of that.

Oh I didnt realise it was a popular contender for royal baby #3

Wrong way around. The place is named for a person, not vice versa. It's a very old female name, many many times older than Australia.

It's a nice name. The place itself is ok-haveyou been there? It's nicer than the majority of British cities but pretty dull.

it's a fine name but I can only say it in a broad Aussie accent...

I don't love it. Adeline is awful though.

Was going to say yes in spades until the comment about it being a Royal Baby possibility (not that I have anything against royal babies, but it might make it over-popular...) It sounds lovely in French. I hadn't thought about Australia, but my Geography is crapulous.

As others said, the place is named after a person, not the other way around.

Paris was Prince of Troy a couple, of thousand years before the city was founded.

I think it's a shame that when places (or cars, come to that) are named after people, the origin gets a bit lost.

Reminds me of Guys and Dolls too.

And now I have the Adelaide song stuck in my head..

Its a lovely name, the name came before the place so not the same as calling a child, London, Brooklyn etc

I didn't know that it was a contender for Royal Baby 3 but don't think they'll go for it, doesn't quite go with George and Charlotte somehow.

The place was named for a person. I rather like it, the name, that is.

I really like it and it's on my list, but I worry people will think it's because of the place, because they don't know any differently. Ho hum, I'll keep pondering. Good luck OP!

FWIW, I also don't see it going with George & Charlotte, but I guess it does have the right pedigree.
