Is Sofia too common?

Very early days in pregnancy but talking baby names with DH. We cannot use the girl's name I dearly love as it's DSD's middle name. There are a few other names i like that we also can't use as they are already used in DH"s family. We both like Sofia (DH loves it) but I am put off by the fact it's so common. I hear/see it literally all the time, including with the Spanish spelling. My 2 sons have classic/quite unusual names that are not overused and I really don't want to use a name that is so common. DH, on the other hand, is Spanish and not at all put off by using a common name, in fact, from his perspective it's good to use a family or well known name. Is Sofia too common though? We have two other names we both like, Ines and Lucia, but I am not made on either of them.

It’s a lovely name but for me its popularity has made it a bit dull as there are so many of them that it’s lost any sparkle. When I hear “Sophia/Sofia” now I hate to say it but I just think, how predictable. I guess it depends whether you really care about that sort of reaction or not, and the reality that there will be several in your child’s class. If you’re not too worried, I’d just go with it anyway Smile

It is used a lot, but it is such a beautiful, classic name that I think it's very usable. (We have a Sophia.) And it has a great meaning too.

Sophie/Sophia/Sofie/Sofia has become quite well used over the past 5-10 years that it has become a little dull.

Lucia and Ines, however, are beautiful and much more interesting imo

aww, thank you all. That was sort of my gut feel. Any views of whether Lucia or Ines is nicer? I seem to change my mind on a daily basis as to which I prefer.

I prefer Ines of those two. It's very elegant, but still cute for a little one.

I think Ines is awesome! Sofia is very popular but does it matter to you?

I think Lucia is gloriously beautiful.

I love Ines. I also like Sofia but it is very popular - I’d go for Ines.

Sofia/ Sophia is very pretty and very popular.

How about:
Georgina
Theodora (lovely meaning )
Cecilia
Celina/ Selina

The reality is that Sofia/Sophia is a global name and widely in lots of different cultures. So in a sense it makes it easy to say and easy to come across another Sofia.

Sofia is a lovely name and I don’t know of any young Sofia’s at all. I like Lucia as well but Ines sounds a bit harsh to me.

Not sure where that apostrophe came from Hmm (autocorrect was that you?)

Would you pronounce it Soph-ee-uh or Soph-eye-uh?

Sofia is lovely but since you asked whether it is too common, I remembered reading an article just a couple of weeks ago that reported that it is literally the most popular female name in the world!

Sofia is the no1 used name in the entire world right now ( literally it's the #1 world girls name).

Was about to comment the same as above - just read an article that says it’s the most common girls name in the world as it’s number 1 in over 20 countries or something like that. It’s a lovely name and I personally don’t know any Sofia’s - I do know a couple of children called Sophie and an adult Sofie though..

Lucia is more interesting than Sofia. Ines is a cool name too, it sounds more quirky than the other two. Of the three I would choose Lucia.

My friend has a Saffiya which is pretty. Sounds very like Sofia but isn't..

I have a Lucia. Have had many lovely comments on her name. There are a few around but it's far from common. How would you pronounce it? Lu-see-a or Lu-chee-a? Ours is the second.
Obviously biased but I prefer it to Ines.

Yes, was coming on to say it's the most common name in the world!

Lucia and Ines and both gorgeous - far preferable.

I know lots of Sofias, but I agree with other posters, Ines is lovely.

The fact it is so popular a name would put me off. Plus it's more popular with the 'Sophia' spelling, so spelling it 'Sofia' would mean constantly having to spell out the name to people.

I absolutely adore Ines.

Not a massive fan of Sofia, I think it's a nice name but there are just so many.
