What are people’s thoughts on using the name Eddie as a first name and not shortened from Edward?

I would stick with Edward. You can always call him Eddie, but he'll have Edward to fall back on if it turns out he's a future accountant type who wants a more serious, grown-up name as an adult. Giving a child the full version of a name gives them more options for names when they're older.

Love the name Eddie but would use Edward on birth certificate.

Agree Edward keeps lots of options open.

I like Eddie, but only as a shortening of Edward. I feel the same about Charlie & Charles, Tom and Thomas etc. I just prefer to have a more classic version of the name on the birth certificate to give the child options.

Its your baby though, so it's up to you of course.

I'm a big fan of Eddie Vedder, so I think it's great Smile

I agree with others about having Edward on the birth certificate tbh. Keeps options open for him when he's older.

Not Eddie on the birth certificate. Could you go for Edmund or Edgar instead of Edward?

I'd not like a name like Eddie on my BC as I grew out of my childhood nickname long ago. I do have some close relatives who still use their diminutives for pretty much everything in their late teens/early twenties so different children will like different things. Nice to have options though.

Edwin, Edric or Edison are other options.

I know an Eddie christened Edward who absolutely despises Edward - only ever uses Eddie, on paperwork and everything. I think for most though, having a longer option is nice.

If you do go for a long name on the bc though, I think Edgar is nicer than Edward.

I like Eddie, but only as a nickname (and Eddie Vedder is an Edward).

Edward, Edmund and Edgar are some full name options.

and Eddie Vedder is an Edward). Yes, Edward Louis Severson nontheless.

Like others, not Eddie on the birth certificate, I'm really not a fan of shortened names

That doesn't age very well. Can you imagine a 50 year old Fortune 500 fat cat intriducibghi self 'Hello, I'm Eddie.'

"Can I call you Eddie?"

"Not if you expect me to answer!"

Pretty woman.

However, I like Edward, it's a classic. Eddie is quite nice, the more I say it the more I like it Smile

Love Edward and Eddie is very sweet. Also reminds me of Eddie Mair who is great.

I’d stick with Edward. Eddie is a cute nickname and you have Ned as an option too! My thoughts are that it is better to have a formal name for their career if they end up having a professional job say in law or something. I’ve never heard of a barrister with a nicknamey type name.

Thank you for all the reply’s some good points there we hadn’t thought about. It’s not that we don’t like the name Edward we do it’s just our daughters name is Isla and we are not sure if Edward is to much of a classical/old name against Isla. If he was first born then maybe it would flow better. That’s why we were thinking of Eddie rather than Edward.

Eddie & Isla go really well together Smile

I would put Edward on the birth cert but introduce him as Eddie in your texts introducing him and for school etc.

I know someone who did this with Daniel but we only know them as Danny.

But he would have it if he wanted to in years to come. Love Eddie. Sounds so cool with Isla.

Eddie sounds cutesy and childish to me. It also does not sound masculine at all. Would a grown man really like to be called Eddie?

Edmund, Edward, Edwin, Edgar are all much better options imo.

I have an Eddie who is just Eddie on his birth certificate. It's an awesome name Grin
I also know plenty of grown up Eddie's and Ed's whose name hasn't held them back in life!
We really didn't like the name Edward and if you put it on the bc it will always get used so just use the name you like most!

Edison is better than Edward.
