We have one DS. He has a traditional boy's name (think along the William/George lines) it's in the top 50 but not top 10.

We are having another boy in a few weeks time. We want a similarly 'traditional' name. Easy to spell and familiar but I'd rather he wasn't one of 3/4 in his class or peer group.

Front runners so far are :
James (popular we know, but I hardly ever hear of any baby James'... Which is odd!)
Robert
Russell
Tristan
Ellis
Elliot
Benjamin (but I am not hugely fond of Ben)
Peter
Robin
Rowan
Laurence

Suggestions and opinions welcome!!

I have a few front runners but I am interested to see what other people say before I reveal them 😬

I love Elliot, I think I’ll always have a soft spot for it.
All nice, but number one ELLIOT!

Robin is very popular as a girls' name now so that would bother me a bit. I think Benjamin will always be shortened to Ben, it is a terrific name though.

James, Robert, Peter and Laurence all get my vote!

Laurence for me!

James - lovely name
Robert - grand but nothing special
Russell - nah
Tristan - lovely, although posh
Ellis - nice
Elliot - nice. Ime more popular than Ellis
Benjamin - if you're not loving Ben, avoid it - tbh it's an alright name but not amazing
Peter - love it, very unusual these days too
Robin - blah. Very wet.
Rowan - meek and wet imo
Laurence - this is nice

My favourites are Laurence, Peter and Tristan.

Suggestions: Adam, Lucas/Luca, Dominic, Travis, Michael, Eric, Cormac, Emmet, David.

Just had a baby boy in June and Rowan and Laurence were on our shortlist (but not what we ultimately chose) so those are my favorites!

James - I’m not overly keen. I grew up in the 90s when every other boy was called James so I just don’t find it particularly exciting.
Robert - See above. I know that this is the style of name you like but Rob is just a bloke in the pub type of name.
Russell - It’s ok. Russ is quite cute but I can’t picture a baby Russell.
Tristan - Probably one of my preferred names on the list just because it’s a bit different. I wouldn’t use it myself but it’s not awful.
Ellis - Same as Tristan really. I like it more than some of your others because it’s less boring but I wouldn’t use it.
Elliot - I’ve always found this name really wet and a bit feminine. I don’t know why.
Benjamin - I like Ben but as you don’t I would avoid it because he’ll never stay as Benjamin. Unless you’d be happy with Benny or Benj as his nickname instead?
Peter - Nope
Robin - I know a few builders in their 50s called Robin so that’s what I associate the name with but I do quite like it
Rowan - Probably my favourite on here but I do think it’s feminine. I much prefer Roman.
Laurence - No. Sorry, I have always hated this name since I was a child! I don’t know why as have only ever known Laurence’s in passing. I just find it so wet. I also hate the shortening of Larry as we always used Larry as a term for loner growing up. (Did everybody do this or is it a regional thing?)

Sorry, I realised half way through this list that we definitely have different tastes but I’d committed by then so thought I’d continue. In all honesty all of the names are fine. Boring to me but if you like them then it’s only for you to decide.

Haha pinkflamingo that's ok! We haven't named him yet so I'm not offended.

Our general preference is for something fairly standard so I can totally see people considering them to be boring. I don't actually mind that.

All my friends have Noah/Arlo/Alfie/ etc and I personally wouldn't pick a name like that as it feels a bit faddy. Not a bad thing in many respects but not what I'm keen on.

Matthew?

A lot of these names, Matthew, Daniel, Alexander, Edward etc are so lovely but I am just not keen on the shortenings. Our DS1 has a name we love which doesn't have any obvious abbreviations.

Interestingly, nobody has mentioned DS1's name yet!

What about Christopher? You hardly ever hear that any more, but it's a lovely name

James is very popular here including babies and toddlers.
I love Peter and Benjamin. I know two under 8s and both never get them shortened. I love the names Thomas, Nicholas and Joseph.

LadyMonica yes that's the sort of vibe we are going for, traditional but under used. It is a nice name! Not sure about Chris but worth considering!!

Scarlett I LOVE Nicholas and like Nick, but it's pretty much the ONLY name in the world that doesn't work with our surname as it merges together and makes a totally different name!! Thomas is out because of a family member. Joeseph I really like actually :) not sure how I feel about Joe, but Joeseph I like.

Elliot and Peter are both gorgeous.
Not keen on the others. Also if you don't like Ben avoid Benjamin.
You can't exactly say to him when he's 25 "You can't call yourself Ben, because, I don't like it."
