Maryjane or Maryjoan

We nearly went with Maryjane for DD1. Now we're about to ttc and wondering whether to revive it if we have another girl. However, using the joan ending would mean she was named after both of our grandmothers, one whom is no longer alive.
(am aware of the drug link. am ignoring it in favour of the AA Milne poem link)
DD1 is Carmen.

I think Maryjane is better. You and she would be constantly correcting Maryjoan as people would assume it was Maryjane.

Sophronia Mon 16-Oct-17 21:15:16

Maryjane, but I prefer Mary Jane.

Mary Jane or Mary Joan

moomintrollz Mon 16-Oct-17 21:18:08

I have a friend called MaryJane. EVERYONE calls her MJ.
But I like it better than MaryJoan.

Laura2018 Mon 16-Oct-17 21:18:11

It's a lovely name but it does make me think of pot and that song 😂

AdalindSchade Mon 16-Oct-17 21:19:47

Mary Joan (Joan as middle name)
MaryJoan is heinous.

stevensupersquirrel Mon 16-Oct-17 21:21:54

I'd go with Mary Joan personally, as I'm not keen on names that run into each other, and Joan is a more uncommon choice than Jane - plus my dd's mn is Joan smile

KoalaD Mon 16-Oct-17 21:24:44

I can't stand the name Joan, in any context.

Mary-Jane. Even better, I know a Jane-Mary (which I love).

Mrsknackered Mon 16-Oct-17 21:36:21

My grandma is Mary-Jane. Funnily enough she's always been known as Meg!
She's lovely so I love it. Not a fan of Maryjoan

Carouselfish Mon 16-Oct-17 21:37:18

Heinous is a bit harsh considering I did say it was a late (and dearly loved) grandmother's!!

Interesting about the seperation of the names being preferred. I'm just anti-hyphenation. I'd alway assumed it was Mary Jane but saw it all run together recently and thought it looked prettier.

AtSea1979 Mon 16-Oct-17 21:38:40

confused so many people don't like Joan. I love it. Mary-Joan vote from me.

DramaAlpaca Mon 16-Oct-17 21:39:58

Mary Jane is lovely, but as two separate names.

I cannot bear the name Joan. Sorry OP.

cheminotte Mon 16-Oct-17 21:40:47

Sorry Mary Jane as slang for marijuana is my first thought.

Carouselfish Mon 16-Oct-17 21:42:19

Well, haha! Just spoken to my DM who says that my GM hated her name! So that's sorted that!

Liadain Mon 16-Oct-17 21:42:48

I think the names look horrible run together. Definitely would go with separate names.
Mary Joan is ok, but Mary Jane...I just can't shake the marijuana association!

BackforGood Mon 16-Oct-17 22:44:47

I wouldn't run names together. Personally I don't like doublenames anyway, I think they are a bit 'cutsie' and just make me think of The Waltons but I think running them together just makes it look like a typo.

PandorasXbox Mon 16-Oct-17 23:10:29

Love it. Nn MJ is adorable.

SuperBeagle Mon 16-Oct-17 23:18:13

Both are pretty dire, honestly.

Mary Jane is widely known slang for marijuana, as others have pointed out on this thread.

Mary Joan is just frumpy sounding.

Maryjane and Maryjoan are terrible.

Beansonapost Mon 16-Oct-17 23:20:10

MaryJoan likes a moan... and other words that rhyme.

I prefer MaryJane

nodogsinthebedroom Mon 16-Oct-17 23:27:40

You can have two "first names" without hyphenating. I think that is preferable to two running together.

dippyeggsandtoast Mon 16-Oct-17 23:33:21

I am adopted and found out my birth name was chosen due to its connotation with cannabis.

I changed it. Each to their own but I hated my name.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen Mon 16-Oct-17 23:37:41

I love the name Joan,it's so pretty.

Bluerosethorns Mon 16-Oct-17 23:42:08

Maryjane is weed. Why would you call your kid that? I like to smoke but don't think i'd name my child after it.

Bluerosethorns Mon 16-Oct-17 23:43:56

Maryjoan reminds me of a little house on the prairie child who has brothers called billy bob and joey joe bob.
