Odd thread title but stay with me. My husband and I really like 'Jay' as a middle name for our baby boy. So for example, 'Michael Jay Smith' (not our surname!)

Now... We love it but both also immediately went 'that's Homer's middle name in the Simpsons'. There's a whole episode about it. Not the worst thing in the world but I'm just wondering how many people immediately think 'The Simpsons'?

I know the episode but wouldn't think of it or make the connection.

MammieBear · 23/09/2017 10:50

I did think it and remember the episode why don't you give him Jason as a middle and call the middle name Jay?

nodogsinthebedroom · 23/09/2017 11:21

I really wouldn't think of the Simpsons. Jay is a bird name like Finch or Robin.

MonkeyJumping · 23/09/2017 11:39

I've never thought of the Simpson when reading Stephen jay Gould so I think its ok.

NoCapes · 23/09/2017 11:41

My sons middle name is Jay and in 8 years the Simpsons has never been mentioned nor crossed my mind
I think you'd have to be a super fan to get from a very ordinary name to the Simpsons tbh

Lemondrop99 · 23/09/2017 12:41

As monkey said, I know the episode but wouldn't have really thought much of it

sycamore54321 · 23/09/2017 12:45

Homer's middle name isn't Jay, his middle initial is J. Americans often use the middle initial as part of the formal name "George W Bush" a and your middle initial appears on official documents and your credit card etc.

Incidentally I think part of the joke is that all of the Simpsons characters have J as their middle initial.

To be honest, I wouldn't let it sway you

EssentialHummus · 23/09/2017 12:48

I watch a lot of Simpsons and wouldn't have clocked this.

ClashCityRocker · 23/09/2017 13:00

sycamore it is Jay. There was a whole episode about finding out what the J stood for.. And it turned out to be Jay.

I don't think it's a problem op. I know the episode you're on about, and whilst it might or might not cross my mind I wouldn't think anything of it.

tailspin · 23/09/2017 13:05

Thanks all! I know it's a bit far fetched, we both absolutely love the name but also watched loads of the Simpsons when we were young so both our brains went there! We're gonna go for it Smile

I know someone who used Jay as a middle name because of the simpsons

DiegoMadonna · 23/09/2017 13:32

I'm just wondering how many people immediately think 'The Simpsons'?

I would guess the answer to that question is very few! What a bizarrely specific thing to worry about.

MonkeyJumping · 23/09/2017 14:40

@sycamore54321 the whole point of the episode is that homer has never known what the j stands for because his mother chose the name but then abandoned him when he was young and he's very keen to find out what j stands for. Eventually he finds out that it stands for Jay, so there's quite a funny "my name is homer Jay Simpson, not homer J Simpson!" moment.

Still don't think it's a problem though!

ladybirdsaredotty · 24/09/2017 11:59

Nah I think it's fine. I know the episode and love it 😀

Liadain · 24/09/2017 13:33

You are definitely overthinking it a bit op! I doubt many people would associate it with that.

userofthiswebsite · 24/09/2017 13:38

I don't think it is an issue.
If you were going with Bart or Homer, yes, I'd think, 'Oh, like the Simpsons' but not so with Jay.

TheAntiBoop · 24/09/2017 13:53

The middle name makes me think of Donald J. Trump!!

bridgetreilly · 24/09/2017 21:09

It reminds me more of Michael J Fox.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 24/09/2017 21:14

I have a DS with the middle name Jay and no one has ever mentioned 'like the Simpsons'. And also now he is older middle names very rarely get mentioned apart from form filling so it really wouldn't matter even if it did remind people of the symptoms.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 24/09/2017 21:14

Simpsons!

CarlHickbread · 24/09/2017 21:16

I think it's a great middle name because of the Simpsons link! I wish I had used it for DS now

stopbeingadramallama · 24/09/2017 21:21

Definitely didn't think of Homer when I saw.

Donald J Trump.
