Thoughts on Tor please (for a boy)? Not short for anything, just as is.

I don't like it. I do like Thor and Torin though...

I'd think you were Irish and his name was "Thor ".

is it a name in any culture your affiliated with?

Does he seem rocky? He'll be useful if ever he does Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.

I know a Tor short for Victoria.

Victor?

I love it. I knew a rather dreamy Torgeir at uni and we considered it for ds1. For me it made me think of handsome, scampi uni boy rugged moors and stuff. Dh said it just reminded him of wet holidays in Torquay.

I know a 40 year old Tor and a baby Tor. Both short for Torsten.

Seemed weird when I first heard it but totally used to it now.

Um.... do you know what Tor is, and what it's used for? You should probably have a little Google. I imagine a teenage Tor might have something of a hard time.

Haint · 19/09/2017 20:32

As in dark web? I guess it'd give him a certain cachet with teens if it's still around when he gets there

Tor..tilla!
Unless its short for a more meaningful name, then no.

ThisIsntMyUsualName · 19/09/2017 20:35

What is tor? Other than a rocky outcrop. Is that an insult these days?

Torquil is nicer as a full name. Tor is awfully short.

Tor and Torq are robust nicknames.

Reminds me of the musician Tor Miller who I loooooove!

It means "goal" (as in football) in German, as well as "gate", so I just think of that. I prefer Torin.

Report
Redpramlady · 19/09/2017 20:44

I taught a tor once, just as it is! He's about 12 now and it suited him!

Yeah, as in Tor hidden services, marketplace for stolen credit cards, narcotics, illegal weapons, child abuse images... There are legit uses of Tor too, but it looks a bit high risk to saddle a child with the name.

I actually like Thor though!

I know of a mumsnetter with a little boy called Tor. He's gorgeous.

Thanks all. About as mixed as I expected.

I like Torin but not as much as Tor. Not a fan of the other longer forms. I like the shortness (longish surname).

It's a Nordic name technically, I'm not but I don't think it's too "forrin" is it? Easy enough to pronounce/spell I think?

I know a Thor whose Danish but never heard Tor as a name, I'd assume it was short for something
