I know one, it really suits her. It's not a name I'd use, but it's pretty, and different without being too out there.

I really like Ebony as a name but I don't know that I would use it unless there was something in my child's colourings which went with te connotations of the dark brown black. So for example very dark black/brown hair or those amazingly dark brown eyes some people have.

I think it's a lovely name.

Its Lovely.

Yes soup I think that's my problem with it, it could be a bit discordant on a blonde, blue eyed child.

I have taught a blond Ebony but it suited her

Ebony Rainford-Brent - retired cricketer and now commentator. If you have a second, check out all her names on Wickipedia. She has lots!

I love the name Evoni

(Am always suggesting it for an alternative to Ebony)

Report
MissAlabamaWhitman · 17/08/2017 23:27

I have Bonnie as an alternative, Evoni sounds nice, is it foreign?

Bloody hell Ebony-Jewel Cora-Lee Camellia Rosamund Rainford-Brent.

I'm hazarding a guess that she hasn't got any sisters/has lots of brothers Grin

I think Ebony, on a white child, is a bit jarring on a cultural level.

I utterly detest Bonnie though.

Evelyn?

ConfusedGrin How, exactly?

Evelyn. No.

We have no MC aspirations.
Evelyn is very 'try hard' to my mind.

I'm liking Bonnie. Bonnie Elisabeth.
Ebony Elisabeth.
Child is likely to be strawberry blonde though if current DC are a good indicator.

Umm, Evelyn is extremely popular and not at all to my tastes. I just thought it might suit yours.

Bonnie = fat to me.

You can't call a white child ebony, it has massive cultural connotations

Report
soupforbrains · 18/08/2017 00:04

I do think ebony is out of the window for you with the likely colourings I'm afraid.

I really don't like the name Bonnie.

What about Elodie?

A bit ridiculous to suggest a white child can't called Ebony......haven't seen many red people strolling round lately (( Scarlet )) or purple for that matter (( Violet ))

I cant believe what i'm reading, are people insinuating a white person cant be called ebony?
My son may have been an ebony if he had been a girl, and he is blond and blue eyed! I just liked the name!
If you like it, use it 😊

I don't like it. Rightly or wrongly, based on I don't know quite what, I think of Raven and Ebony as names that would as a pp said feel a bit discordant on a white child. Although I take the point that a Violet is not going to be Violet! Ruby is not going to be red. Hmm. Maybe I've talked myself in to thinking it's ok. Only ok though.

There's a name Eben and I like that.

I think Ebony is a beautiful, underused name. I don't think it would be odd at all to use it on a white child.
There are lots of names that depict colours. No one expects Scarlett to have red hair, Jade to have green eyes, or Pearl to be white.

Report
SkintAsASkintThing · 18/08/2017 00:24

Pearl is also a name that's often used by black people.......really don't think we should start ascribing names to races.

It reminds me of Paul McCartney though.

It's a bit ridiculous that you're as culturally ignorant as the op, skint and yet here we are.

Report
JuicyCake · 18/08/2017 00:54

Ebony is the name of a magazine aimed at the African American market. It's a name I would associate with black women, more so.
