How common is Elsa?

I have loved the name Elsa, since I first heard the name on the TV series Mistresses. Now almost 10 years later and four boys, I now have an opportunity to use it. Or has Frozen ruined my chances of using the name? I also like Martha.

Use Martha.

Elsa will be associated with a Frozen for years to come. Possibly longer. Just like Sabrina still makes people think of the witch and Priscilla makes people think of the Queen of the Desert. Elsa is too unusual a name to be separated from that association.

I really like the name Elsa. I usually find some sort of association with every name & tbh can think of worse associations. The name I wanted for my daughter had some sort association with a TV character so I chose a different name. 12 years on I still really like the name I didn't choose.

I know a 20 year old, no little ones. Lovely name.

I don't know any. I prefer it to Martha which I really don't like much. I know a beautiful Chinese Priscilla and have never thought about Queen of the Desert! I thought Frozen was well past its sell by.

i know 3 (eldest is 12) and 2 little Elsies.
I'd avoid it now to be honest.

I'd use it, Frozen will be forgotten soon enough, well not forgotten but less relevant. I personally wouldn't think of Frozen at all.

Bad, Frozen 2 will be out soon though Grin

They are both nice, use the name you love.

If you've always loved it, use it.

I've never met an Elsa, and I much prefer it to Martha.

Elise is similar but I much prefer it.

Martha is lovely, I have a two year old niece called Martha and she is so cheeky and adorable.

Use it! I know one little one who must be about 4 now and was names it before the movie came out, much to her mother's dismay! But I haven't witnessed the name gaining popularity at all! Elsie yes, but not Elsa- if anything, people are avoiding it because of Frozen. I don't think Elsa is a bad character to be named after.

It peaked in 2014-but only 530odd that year. Which isn't many in 3000000 babies! Down to less than 200 in 2015. So I reckon you're safe. Lovely name.

She is going to have a very unusual middle name, so it wouldn't be a disaster if there were other little Elsa's in her class. It's the thought of getting ''Oh, like Frozen!'' comments, I think it might bug me.

It's such a lovely name and is the Frozen connection really all that bad? As a child she may even revel in it.

People obviously turned off it by the cartoon connection which is good in a way as there are unlikely to be lots of them about.

What about Ailsa, similar pronunciation, but no Frozen connotations.

PutThatPomBearBack · 28/06/2017 17:39

Since frozen? Very.

Alias is very similar but it doesn't have any of the appeal of Elsa. To me that is!

Ailsa will always be the permed woman with the hamburger phone in Home and Away 😄

Ailsa I meant, not Alias!

Use it. It's a lovely name and Frozen won't be around forever, where as you've waited a long time to use the name. Go for it!

As others have said the Frozen association won't be around for ever. It'd put me off a bit I think but then if you love the name then go for it. Do you think you'd regret it down the line if you chose something else?

For what it's worth though I think Martha is a really lovely name.
