Has Alison had it's day?

Opinions on the name Alison?

Trying very hard to think of names with DH (6 weeks to go...) and we both quite like this name but don't know if it's too dated without having the 'old school cool' feel?

It's also the name of a close family member, and the middle name of another family member who passed away recently so would have some sentimental value.

Thoughts?

I think it's nice, classic, and Ali is a good nickname.

SuperBeagle · 30/04/2017 21:23

Yes.

It seems very outdated to me.

Alice is much fresher. You could still get Allie for short.

Sophronia · 30/04/2017 21:23

It's dated, but I'd rather hear of a little Alison than another Lily or Ava.

PartiallyStars · 30/04/2017 21:25

I really like it. There are lots of Alices. It's a great name.

DramaAlpaca · 30/04/2017 21:27

It's a bit dated, but not in a bad way. The youngest Alison I know is in her early 20s. I love that it's a fairly modern sounding name but is actually really old, it was popular in the middle ages. So you could say it's an underused classic. I like it a lot.

Yeh about twenty years ago

Theresomethingaboutdairy · 30/04/2017 21:28

Love it. An underused classic

WobblyLondoner · 30/04/2017 21:30

That's my name. I meet many many Alisons in their 40s and 50s - but hardly ever any who are younger.

I actually quite like it as a name now - the main thing I hated when I was growing up was how bloody many of us there were.

If you do go down that route just don't spell it Allison or Alyson .. Wink

pollypeanuts · 30/04/2017 21:30

I like it

EtonMessi · 30/04/2017 21:31

It's very dated but it's a lovely name. I'd say if you like it, go for it.

Seqkat · 30/04/2017 21:37

It is less common now, but given that the shortened forms (Ali, for example) are still used, it really adds a nice classic twist to a common nickname. I really like it!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/04/2017 21:39

Id say its had its day in a sense of being dated rather than popularity such as Freya Ava Ruby Isla ect, but. There's no law that a "dated" name can not be given a revival. On a personal level I don't like Alison. However it would sound very refreshing in a class full of names mentioned above

Kazzawazza69 · 30/04/2017 21:40

I would think of an older person when hearing the name. I do know an Alicen who is my age though (31).

Thanks - more positive replies than I was expecting!

It's what DS would have been called if he was a girl. I still really like it.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 30/04/2017 21:55

I really like it.

WildwestWind · 30/04/2017 21:56

Gorgeous name and she won't be one of five in her class

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 30/04/2017 21:57

I know of 2 babies called Alison. Both are very cute. Neither are mine.

NorksAreMessy · 30/04/2017 21:58

I think Alison, Caroline, Christine, Helen, and so on are NEARLY due for a revival. Maybe in the next ten years or so.....:)

2014newme · 30/04/2017 21:58

Like a lot. Agree classic

ZilphasHatpin · 30/04/2017 21:59

My sister is alison, we call her Ali. She is 30 this year. I think it's nice.

SleepForTheWeek · 30/04/2017 22:10

Ah, the positivity has really helped! We've only got one other name for a girl so at least we may have 2 t choose from.

We don't actually know what we are having so now need to work on boys names...

Interesting Navy - not keen on any of those names!

I agree with Norks. It will be back with a vengeance in a generation. You could be a trendsetter!
(like the Outnumbered parents with their anachronistic Karen, who really would have been Chloe/Alice/Emily/Olivia/Grace or the other top 10 /5 in a class names!
