Spanish/Catalan Baby Name Help!

Morning all,

My husband is Spanish/Catalan and we'd like to pick a Spanish or Catalan name for our baby that is fairly easy for English speakers to pronounce correctly.

For a girl, my favourites so far are:

  • Lucia
  • Elena
  • Alicia
  • Mireia (pronounced Meer-aye-a)

Lucia is my favourite of the list but one thing that really puts me off is the fact that it's been the most popular girls name in Spain for the past 5 years. Although we don't have any immediate plans to move back to Spain, it's a possibility. My husband doesn't think this is an issue and says that as there are fewer name choices in Spanish it's no big deal - it's totally normal for there to be 5 Marias or 5 Antonios in a class. Mireia is a beautiful Catalan name but I think it's probably too unusual outside of Spain and people would always struggle to pronounce/spell it.

For boys we want to avoid a name ending in "o" because my OH can't stand the way most non-Spanish speakers pronounce it -elongating the "O" sound. My husband would prefer a Catalan name if it's a boy. So the list so far is:

  • Rafael (spelt the Spanish not Catalan way)
  • Mateu or Mateo (only exception to the no "o" name rule)
  • Pau (pronounced "Pow" - husband's choice but I think it might sound odd to non-Catalan speakers)

I love the Catalan name Mateu but I think the vowel sounds in it at the end are really difficult for non-Catalan speakers to pronounce (myself included!). We could also go for a Catalan/Spanish name like Alexandre, Marc, Daniel or David but they seems a little boring IMO.

Any opinions/alternatives very welcome!

Smile

Reading your list I would choose Mireia or Mateo.

Mireia may be unusual outside Spain but it pronounced in my head the way you described it and doesn't appear in any way outlandish.

If you like Lucia best though I'd probably go for it anyway, or have it as a middle name after Mireia so you could still use it if you wanted to.

I love Alicia and Elena. Lucia and Mireia are also perfectly fine names imo (although Mireia is probably the one that's the most unusual outside of Spain).

I really like Rafael. Mateo is also nice.

I know a Spanish woman called Carolina, a really lovely name imo... I also like Carmen, Liliana, Clementina and Florina (Idk, maybe those are really outdated in Spain or something, I'm not Spanish...)

Congratulations :)!

I think the problem with Pau is that English speakers will think it's like Paul without the L - so Paw.

Jordi is the boy's name which immediately springs to mind and is easy to pronounce for English speakers. Or Iker (or is that Basque?)

For girls: Nuria, Alba, Montserrat or Maite?

I know a Pau living outside Catalunya who spends his life saying 'Pau, not Paul'. So there's that.
We will be living there so are staying away from Laia, Jordi etc. but I think those would be great names if you lived abroad and would give a clear Catalan identity if you moved back.
I love Mar, Lluisa/Lluis, Noemi, Roser.

All your girls names are lovely.. you might find people pronounce Lucia the Italian way though. I have a Gabriela (also Spanish).. easy for the English speakers too - even if it's often spelled with two ls. Rafael is lovely - I also like Sebastian.

What about Llorens? Not the easiest to spell but on a spoken level it should be ok as I believe it sounds just like Lawrence?

I love Alba or Montse for a girl and would totally use these if i had (a) a DD and (b) something to justify using a Catalan name.

I love all of these names!
Wish I'd had the bottle to go with a Spanish name. I'm a Spanish teacher but that's my only connection to Spain!

Love Elena, Carmen, and Pilar for girls.
Rafael, Xavier, Agustín and Sancho for boys.

Just in case you're interested, "pau" mean dick in portuguese.

I like all your girls names. I don't think explaining the pronunciation of mireia would be that much effort either.

Hey! I am Catalan and I have an American partner and we have discussed on multiple occasions about our children's names.
Paul is a very great name because in Catalan the name Pol is very common and it is pronounced exactly like Paul.
These are some other great boy names we have thought of:
Teo
Albert
Matias
Mateo
Diego
Lucas
Bruno
Marc
Millan
Nicolas
Adrian

,and here are some great girl names :

Paula
Lola
Andrea
Luna
Blanca
Elsa
Valentina
Martina
Julia

Congratulations!

I teach a Mireia. The first thing I thought when I met her was how beautiful her name was.
