Posted a boys names shortlist a month or so back and since then we have managed to refine it a bit further.

Neither DH or I 'love' any of these names the way we do with our chosen girls name but we both like all of the below enough to consider them. I'm hoping if it is a boy we will know the right name/grow to love the name..

Alexander
William
Angus
Finlay
Fraser
Ben (Benjamin on birth cert)
Charlie (Again I would put Charles on birth cert but DH says he hates Charles so this may be a stumbling block)

Thank you smile

Alexander - not keen.
William - like, love Will.
Angus - okay
Finlay - not for me.
Fraser - really like, not overly used.
Ben - good strong name, really like this name too.
Charlie -not for me.

ClaryBeanHorshAndMe Wed 29-Mar-17 13:16:17

Alexander: it's nice but too popular imo
William: lovely
Angus: Love it, but I always see Anus... sad
Finlay: It's ok
Fraser: I like it
Ben (Benjamin on birth cert): I dislike it
Charlie (Again I would put Charles on birth cert but DH says he hates Charles so this may be a stumbling block): I love Charles nn Charlie,

1. Charles/Charlie
2. Fraser
3. William

Congratulations smile

Biased as I have an Alex(ander) albeit he is a grown up one. there were a couple of others in his class.

I work in a school and all your others are very popular names of which there are multiples if that matters. There are even a couple of Anguses (and we are in the SE).

I prefer the more traditional names and I fear that Finlay falls into Katie Hopkins' Tyler category grin

marmitecheesetoast Wed 29-Mar-17 13:50:05

Thanks for your comments so far!

allthebestnames I would have thought Alexander and William are the two most popular/most likely to have multiples but curious if that's not necessarily the case? Finlay is a more traditional name in Scotland (where I'm from, although we live in England) but I did wonder whether it's seen as a bit more modern/fashionable down here?

Loyly Wed 29-Mar-17 13:51:01

Angus is my favourite.

grufallosfriend Wed 29-Mar-17 15:38:20

I like Angus and Fraser.

The Williams I know get teased with Willy and Ben/Charlie/Alex are very very popular already.

Mrsknackered Wed 29-Mar-17 17:01:01

Alexander - so many (my youngest DP is this and he is one of 6 Alex's in his year)
William - love it
Angus - love it
Finlay - Boring
Fraser - too American for me
Ben - my dad's name and my son's middle name, however I do find it quite bland for a first name - sorry!
Charlie - irrationally dislike, even more so Charles.

Mrsknackered Wed 29-Mar-17 17:01:24

*DB not DP!

ineedamoreadultieradult Wed 29-Mar-17 17:05:25

Alexander - I dont like Alex so its a no for me
William - love it but prefer nickname Will over Billy
Angus - no reminds me of cows
Finlay - love it
Fraser - I dont know why but I dont like it
Ben (Benjamin on birth cert) - Love it
Charlie - no

marmitecheesetoast Wed 29-Mar-17 17:12:22

Fraser - too American for me
That's interesting, I knew of a few Frasers growing up in Scotland so never perceived it as American sounding, do others perceive it be a more American name?

If went with William nn would be Will (quite like Bill too for when older)

Alexander - I'm not sure I like Alex enough as a shortening which is a problem. I quite like just Al, or Sandy or maybe even Sacha. I also like Alexander as a full name in itself. But realistically I guess they are most likely to be Alex?

Mumzypopz Wed 29-Mar-17 18:23:55

Don't like Angus or Finley, the rest I like.

Mumzypopz Wed 29-Mar-17 18:25:18

Fraser.....Think people are getting mixed up with the American sitcom, Frasier

geordiedench Wed 29-Mar-17 18:28:55

I like Scottish names generally, so Alexander and Fraser are both lovely to me (also family names, so biased.) Al or Sacha are great shortened versions of Alexander. There's also Xander, Alec, Ally, Sandy. It's pretty versatile.
If you like Scottish names, how about Callum or Ruaridh or Cameron?

ClaryBeanHorshAndMe Wed 29-Mar-17 18:31:16

I know an Alexander that goes by Alec? Not sure if you'd like that one...

MyBootsAreMuddy Wed 29-Mar-17 18:35:01

Alexander- Really like this, not keen on Alex. My favourite nn is Xander
William- like
Angus- Like this one too
Finlay- Not keen
Fraser- the more I say it the more it grows on me.
Ben- I'm not keen on Ben, but like Benjamin and Benny
Charlie- not a fan of this name, but probably more to do with the fact that I knew an awful one.

buttercup54321 Wed 29-Mar-17 20:15:55

Love William and Alexander. Like Charlie but not Charles. Not keen on the others.
what about

Michael
Simon
David
Henry
Richard
Thomas
Jonathan
Christopher
Timothy
Stephen
James

Daniel
Raymond

CPtart Wed 29-Mar-17 20:46:28

Alexander - like it
William - love it (DS2 middle name)
Angus, Finlay, Fraser - not keen. Rather dull.
Benjamin - love it. DS2 was nearly this.
Charlie- detest it. In the same vein as Alfie, Archie, Freddie, etc etc.

marmitecheesetoast Wed 29-Mar-17 21:03:25

Fraser.....Think people are getting mixed up with the American sitcom, Frasier Ah yes that may be it Mumzy

Thanks Geordie DH hates Xander as a nn but we both like Sandy. I like Callum but DH doesn't. Not a fan of Cameron (know a few not nice ones!) and can't use Ruaridh

I think Charlie is probably off the list as that was a bit of a wild card anyway.

superbean Wed 29-Mar-17 21:13:45

I like them all!

We have all these names at school, William is the most popular.

Do you like Benedict any better than Benjamin?

witsender Wed 29-Mar-17 21:29:13

I know a few Williams and no other Alexanders. Alexander can also be Xander or Xandy, which is nice. Not a fan of the others.

Sophronia Wed 29-Mar-17 21:35:21

Angus or Fraser

Epipgab Wed 29-Mar-17 21:52:20

I like William, Angus and Alexander.

mum2be2boys Wed 29-Mar-17 22:30:02

I like them all except Finlay (purely because there is a little one who lives in our road and I hear his mum screech it loudly several times a day - it really put me off!)

My favourites from your list are Alexander, William and Ben :-)

SuperBeagle Wed 29-Mar-17 23:02:57

Alexander - I've never been a fan of this, but weirdly I love Alexandra for a girl...

William - Lovely. Very popular, but always has been and always will be. Lots of nickname potential.

Angus - I don't mind this. I know one who goes by Gus. It's not my favourite though.

Finlay - I like it, but he might get lost among the sea of Finns and Finleys. Do you like Flynn? It's similar but substantially less popular. smile

Fraser - Really like this one.

Ben (Benjamin on birth cert) - Love. Not as popular as it was 10+ years ago, but it's not the kind of name that would ever date. Perfect, really.

Charlie (Again I would put Charles on birth cert but DH says he hates Charles so this may be a stumbling block) - I love Charlie. I'm with your DH on not loving Charles, but if he'll only ever go by Charlie, then Charles doesn't matter much.

Benjamin is my favourite.
